I tried to overlook the lore issues, and just take it on it's own merits. But the other problem I had is that I'd also played Dark Alliance and Bard's Tale, which both used the same engine as Brotherhood of Steel. And personally, I didn't think it even stood up very well compared to the gameplay in those games, either. At best, I thought it was a sub-par action RPG. I would have given Dark Alliance a 3/5, Bard's Tale a 4/5, and Brotherhood of Steel something more like 2.5/5 or something like that.
When you get right down to it, though - I just didn't have fun with it. I thought the gameplay wasn't terribly polished, found it overly annoying at times (camera issues, and being shot by enemies off-screen,) and lacking any real "heart" or passion. Shovelware, in other words...
