Geck Complaining...

Post » Sat Aug 07, 2010 8:59 pm

Hai!

I have been taking quite a big break from modelling/modding lately, mostly due to school and.. er.... WoW ... yeah. But after I repaied my old PC and seen that school has cooled down, I see I got time to model some. My experience in Max is 1 year on and off, my experience in Zbrush is 1 month on and off and my experience in Construction Set is about 2 years on and off. I remember I had all out controll when modding TES:4 Oblivion. However, GECK seem to be an all out different thing. As a starter I can't seem to figure out how to make an map marker .... oh well, that is not why I am here:

The problem is that the GECK is constantly complaining about stuff. Every time I open a cell, I get an average of... 20 errors. Usually the error goes like:

MODELS: could not get files for texture /character/headearshuman.dds.

Context: DEFAULT
"Yes to All" will disable all warning for this context.

Usually I get thoose error messages for ears, mouth and you name it. It gets annoying when I am scouting an area, and every third cell I get 5 error messages.

It would be all fine if I HAD the trulu godly " Yes to All" button, but I got " Yes", " No ", " Cancel".

What can be done?

Oh, I also see the GECK crashes at random times for no apperant reason .....

Cheers!

Are the errors listed for models that You have created/modified? Or are these errors for pre-existing mods that you didn't touch? I ask because there are inherently a Ton of errors in the game like that. Usually I see them when loading my mod, and I just select "Yes to All". You may see this in other cells as well, its normal and expected. If the errors are from your own models, then you should address the errors.

You can get a complete list of errors you encountered by looking at the "EditorWarnings.txt" file in the Fallout3 directory.

This will happen most often because of something the user does, and it will crash less the more familiar you get with the tool. Unfortunately the GECK does have some bugs, and can crash sometimes without any warning. Our only defense is to make sure we use AutoSave (I set mine to every 10 min), and make sure to save whenever critical work is done.

Luck!

Thanks for the fast reply!

Ah, yes, this is all pre-existant models. I usually do not try to set in my own models before I am familiar with the software, in this case the GECK. I am mainly going through the tutorial on the GECK wiki, as well as using what I know from the CS. But after 3h messing around I started to get annoyed: mostly because of random crashes for no reason and the fact I get tons of error like the one I quoted.

So there is no reason to fix this? hm.... Is there any way to enable the " Yes to All" then? Since I do not got it, and I believe it would work just fine with it. There is something with having to press " yes" 5-20 times per cell which annoys me ...

Thanks again!

Cheers!

You can fix many issues by installing the Unofficial Fallout3 Patch, which addresses quite a few issues, but alas many of the original issues are still there. With Fallout3 there are over 1,000,000 references, and Bethesda only had so much time to fix all the issues before publication, so "Yes to All" is your friend. :)

The GECK crashes will get less and less just by using the tool. You get to know the things to avoid which can cause crashes. After a year I still get them but only rarely, it can be a tempermental beast. ;)

Ah, I guess I just will have to deal with the errors then. But, I think you misunderstood: I do not got the " Yes to All" button :/ I got "Yes", "No" and "Cancel". So basically I am holding in "Enter" untill it is over, but I somehow predict I will make a error somewhere by keep doing that. Is this a game problem, or a Vista problem?

Well, Thanks again!

Cheers!

makes sense that error happens. that texture didn't ship with the game. and heads don't have separate ears anyway!(like oblivion)
I presume at some point the set up was similar to ob. but the ears were dropped. I say good riddance, 1 less mesh. 1 less hassle.

I usually just hit the close "X" in the top right of the error dialogue. Seems to do the same thing as "yes to all".
