Force Greet Tutorial

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:46 pm

By popular demand, I have put together a step by step http://www.mediafire.com/file/2axjnnwqhzo/Dialogue and Quest Tutorial.7z. It covers Forced Greetings, Speech and Skill Challenges and many of the basics required to get a beginner up to speed with creating and implamenting Dialogue and Quests.
The file is a 7zip archive and contains two files: a Microsoft Word document and an associated ESP that contains all of the tutorial material. I have two more chapters planned so far: Stages & Objectives and Adding Voice and Lip files.

Thanks goes to Miaximus for the Word formatting tips.

I welcome comments, suggestions or notification of typos. :P

Wow - nice job buddy! :goodjob:

I just read-through it and picked-up some knowledge myself!

Only suggestions I would make is that the images are all much larger than the maximum size of the document. I recommend for each image that you drag the margin back closer to the left-side of the page, then re-size the images so they fit exactly within the page. It shows up universally good after that.

Thanks for the tutorial! Tis a fine contributions. :)

Cheers,

Miax

As per Miax's suggestion, I have updated the link for the tutorial with better sized images. I was literally about to update the post when the forum went down. I'm glad they are back up, but this new layout will take some getting used to.

pkleiss, it's great! The step-by-step and pics are very clear and the progession and what to do next is easy to understand. Well done and I think it's great for more than just Forced Greets. Without the script/package part it's a good example of how to initially set up a Quest/set up dialogue which is a very good thing to see done as well. Great stuff for a beginner.

Hey, can you post a pic of some of the weirdness? It looks great on my PC, but I am no Word Expert. If I can see how it looks bad with your Word Normal.dot (the default document template each user has), perhaps I can figure out how to get it to look good for everyone.

EDIT: Hmm. If you are seeing ÐÏࡱá, perhpas you do not have the font installed that I used to make the document. Maybe I should make one with courier. I think everyone has that font. When I install Word, I use the customized install and choose to install all the fonts I can. Let me check and see which font I used.

EDIT: Its 'Times New Roman' which is a very common font. You could also be trying to view it with something other than Microsoft Word.

That error looks like randomly displayed ascii characters. Every letter you type and saved is saved as an ascii character. 98 is lowercase a. 99 is b, 100 is c, ect. and alot of them like 300-1000 are those kinds of random weird characters. My guess is that the download got corrupt or something, and its giving you bad data when you load it. Try redownloadin it, since you really SHOULD have times new roman. Thats the font that like 99.9999% of things come with by default.

Hey, thanks for the compliment! When I made it, I was unsure of the level of the reader, so I opted for the most basic of steps. I plan on adding a few more 'tricks' like how to do a speech challenge and skill challenges. :)

If anyone else has any suggestions to some dialogue techniques they would like to see in the tutorial, please feel free to cowboy (girl) up and let me know.

The tutorial is great, but I have a problem, everything works but my character is not being forced into dialogue. The text instead is just said to my character and can only be read with subtitles on.

How do I set it to make the forced greeting go into dialogue, like how Burke first greets the player?

Ha! Its a forced greet tutorial, not a forced dialogue tutorial. :P It looks like I need to put part two of the tutorial out already. I will do that, but it will take me some time. So, to answer your question, you need to make the regular dialogue topics and then point to them using the 'choices' box on the forced greeting info. That is an extremely brief description, but I hope it helps get you moving in the right direction. And thanks for pointing out that I should have indicated that sub-titles must be turned on. I have mine turned on all the time, but omitted that fact from the tutorial. I'll work on part two today and see how far I can get. Part one took me 6 hours to complete.

@Miax - If you read this, I have a new appreciation of how time consuming a good tutorial is to make. I doubly thank you for all your past work.

Thanks buddy. :)

What I think you will find most gratifying is that modders (many new ones) still get value out of them even a year after you've finished them and moved on to the next projects. I love the fact that several of us here write them!

Yes, ty to tut writers :)

So, to answer your question...

I had a similar problem when I had "Say To" ticked instead of "Conversation" in the dialogue package. Might also be that.

Very nice - and just too late! It so happens that this is exactly what I've been doing over the past couple of days, only I had to work it out by trial and error!

Well done! :)

Oh, ya, the tuts are so helpful. Miax, your FO3 Edit Tome is frequently up on my desktop. And the audiotapes one was so helpful to get me started with dialogue. And Cipscis' stuff as well. pkleiss, I could so have used what you are doing six weeks ago, and I will definetely read it over when it's done for anything you do that will improve how I do things with dialogue. It's sorely needed IMO. Dialogue has a lot of steps to it to get right and a tut from you is a beautiful thing. Thanks for all the work you are doing.

I added a second chapter to the tutorial covering Speech Challenges and skill/perk challenges as well as some basic theory of how dialogue works.

I hope you all will find the tutorial useful.
