Heckler and Koch make great guns. I own a Heckler and Koch USP (Universal Self-loading Pistol) compact chambered in .40 S&W. It is a nice gun. The UMP (Universal Machine Pistol) is an awesome gun- what amuses me however is that the MP5 is consistently shown in videogames as being chambered in the 9mm parabellum. It is available in multiple calibers- not just the .45 ACP, but also the 10MM auto. For those who don't know, the 10mm Auto has the same overall energy of a .357 magnum when fired from a handgun. The longer barrel of a Submachine gun gives it even more energy. A 10mm auto fired from the barrel of a UMP can have roughly as much energy as a hot loaded .41 magnum, which is almost as powerful the as the strongest .44 magnum loads.
Let me repeat that: It is a fully automatic gun with every shot packing as much energy as an average .44 magnum load.
The 10mm auto manages to obtain the overall kinetic energy of a .357 magnum, despite being shorter than a .357, by being wider. It's existence is only possible because modern guns are much stronger than they were at the start of the 1900's when the 1911 came out. We have much more advanced metallurgy and powders today. To my knowledge however you still can't equal the power of a .41 magnum- or for that matter a .44 magnum- with a semi auto cartridge in a light weight gun. If you want that power in a lightweight gun, you still gotta carry a revolver.
