Anyone disappointed by the info so far?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:37 pm

Yeah, apart from destructible environments (which we won't be seeing in a game this big - at least not now), the other things mentioned add nothing to gameplay. People forget TES is an RPG series, not a medieval simulation.

My only disappointment is that a disappointment thread has been created already. I am 100% certain Skyrim will be awesome.

Mmm I agree on your points except on the level scaling, the problem lies within what you consider fun.
I prefer a consistent world where I might be killed by high level monsters, and were i wont be killed by monsters
of my level and lower, and if want to kill higher level monsters then i need to level UP killing less treating
baddies, and then i go for the big kill, the idea is getting a reward after you level up, the way your
putting it leveling up does not matters, we might as well not have a leveling system.

Player level1 = monster level1

Player level 50 = monster level 50

Thus: 1=50 making the leveling pointless.

In fallout they used level and inventory caps for the enemies, and so the auto leveling worked,
in Oblivion they did it like my example... i stooped playing oblivion cause of that, quite the
turn off seeing highway bandits sporting better armor than me, and getting killed by faking
goblins was no fun either, i remember leveling up to raid a dungeon that had 7 goblins,
after leveling up three levels i went back to find not just that the goblins were far more
powerful, but also the double of em... i though i might had miss counted... so i leveled
up two more levels, and then i found skeletons were sent to aid the dam goblins,
and to top it all my reward was a god forsaken chest with 100 coins and some useless
armor junk far less impressive than the ones the highway bandits had at that point....
That is why people HATE the level scaling.

I rest my case.

I haven't read the full article just some scans, so I can't really say anything about a lot of stuff but I will comment on the stuff I have seen.
Radiant story: interesting concept and increases the amount of quests while hopefully making them a bit less repetitive than Daggerfall (which I haven't played but what iv'e read had about six quests it repeated endlessly) and providing incentive to explore more dungeons. Oblivion had dozens of dungeons you had no actual reason to go into and thus most likely never got to see. And with the promised increase in dungeon variation this seems quite promising.
Level scaling: I have no idea why people hate this as much as they do. It's a simple anti-frustration feature. You won't get killed by high-level monsters while exploring when you're low-level, you won't get bored and annoyed by low-level monsters when exploring when you're high-level. Dungeons and quests will always be challenging and thus satisfying provided you have the difficulty at a level good for you.
UI: It does seem a bit cumbersome but I cant really say without seeing it in action.
Combat: Again, have to see it in action but having to have a hand empty to cast magic is actually pretty logical, shield-bash is always good, nice to see that some actual reaction times probably are necessary to fight instead of Morrowinds hit the attack button and pray to the random number god.
Dragons&Dragon killing: Awesome of course.
Graphics: Good, but art-direction is always more important than the amount of polygons and texture detail. And seriously the graphics only have to be good enough to provide an immersive backdrop to the gameplay.

Mmm In my eyes a medieval simulation would be the ultimate RPG, i believe some day this series might get to that level,
so I can understand people wanting more medieval details in their game, Role Playing means playing a role, as in playing a role in
a simulated world, as in a medieval inspired world (in this case), i would love to play an holo deck medieval super realistic game, it cannot
be done right now but i do think RPGs are the seed of scifi matrix like simulations.

Yeah, apart from destructible environments (which we won't be seeing in a game this big - at least not now), the other things mentioned add nothing to gameplay. People forget TES is an RPG series, not a medieval simulation.

No.. As ive played waaay too many rpgs over the years ive come to understand skill numbers dont bring the sbility to ENJOY doing more things.. it just brings more skill numbers.

And no I realy dont care if atributes skill exist. They didnt do much worth caring about before and frankly perks are far more interesting then atributes any day.

Add me to the list I'm very impressed so far, if they beefed up the animations and I mean
really overhauling em to what iv seen other games are doing... have you guys seen the bioshock
infinity in game trailer?, when your saving that girl at the end her face expression and body
language, that is topnotch animation right there hell it looks like a animated feature film!
if this game can produce half the emotion in the faces and body language ill be a happy man.

The graphics in skyrim look fantastic so far, those stills look like paintings, and that
is HARD to pull off in a game, the next test that would be decisive is how things move
and then I'm sold, the technology exists they only need to use it.

I second that. How can someone be disappointed already!? I mean just be patient...

Since people are asking, wanted to briefly touch on level scaling. All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim’s is similar to Fallout 3′s, not Oblivion’s.
Hope that addresses some concerns, and we hope you’re enjoying the GI cover story.
Have a great night

Well this thread is about to pop from too many posts but as for destructible environments not being able to be used in such a large world as skyrim, that's not true anymore. We now have the tech to put destructible environments in such a large world. It's just up to Beth to decide if they want it in or not.

Sure about that? We get woodcutting - might look strange if we can't chop a tree.

Ya I agree, my post was just to explain why people fear level scaling like the plague,
from the sounds of it, Skyrim will be just fine, but Oblivion's scaling still makes
me shiver every time I recall how awful it was.

Most of the whinning is pointless.

Instead your going to hound them about removing worthless/broken skills like you did when they removed the few they did from Morrowind? As for level-scaling, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1156831-skyrim-compilation-and-explanation/ to learn what it will be like basically.

I hounded BGS for removing skills from Morrowind when they made Oblivion? I think I would remember what I did and I don't remember doing that, but my memory can be foggy at times too. Care to remind me when I did that? Did I say BGS didn't have a good reason for removing skills? BGS very well may have good reason, but my question is also legit isn't it? Whether if a person who is good with a 2 handed claymore is going to be just as good with a dagger.

With fewer skills and having nothing else to replace it, in my book would be dumbing down the ES series once again. So that is why I say, hopefully this crafting system is in depth and more than just a gimmick so it can replace a few other things that were taken out. Which skills did you find useless?

As for "hounding", I love it when people do the very thing they complain about another person doing, especially in the same breath/ sentence.

Only thing I'm a tad disappointed in is the lack of some skills, or else everything I've heard sounds amazing. And I haven't got my GI mag yet even.
