Changing sneak damage multipliers

Post » Wed Aug 11, 2010 9:44 pm

I posted in the mods section, but nobody answered, so I'll post here, as it will probably require the use of the construction set anyway. I want to change OOO's sneak damage multiplier to something lower. It's too overpowered at 4x and 8x. Can this be done through the CS?

I'd like to know this too.. though I want to reduce the archery sneak damage by 33% and increase the melee sneak damage by 50%. There's just not enough incentive to backstab instead of fire an arrow!

I can't for the life of me find anywhere to change this or find in google.

It's a gamesetting in the CS. Easy.

Look for: fPerkSneakAttack...

All I can find is "fDamageSneakAttackMult". Is that the only thing we can modify?

It has a value of 4.0000 in vanilla Oblivion. That doesn't tell me much about how it works..

EDIT: Oh there we go, thanks!

There are 10 settings. Like Fragonard said, they start with fPerkSneakAttack followed by Marksman or Melee followed by perk level (novice to master) followed by 'mult'. For example fPerkSneakAttackMarksmanApprenticeMult.

Note that decimal places won't show in game. Eg 1.5x sneak damage will show as 'Sneak attack for 1x damage' in the game message.

Personally I got rid completely of the sneak attack bonus for bows. You get a free damage multiplier on your first shot, that's all it does. I've played this game for four years now and I don't think I ever got detected by an enemy when I was at bow firing distance and sneaking. Even with a sneak skill of 5 and while jumping up and down they don't see you. Just my opinion.

Doesn't that argue *for* giving bows a sneak damage bonus? Otherwise sneak for an archer character becomes a useless skill since they won't detect you no matter what sneak level you have. This at least allows a sneak character to dish out more damage before the enemy closes the gap.

Don't think it is useless, you still have the option to use a melee weapon. Even archers might use a short sword. Imo not every skill needs to be super useful for every type of character. Otherwise mages would have to get a sneak bonus as well for fireballs. In that case it is more important to me that you get no important bonus for free. Since there is absolutely no skill required (neither a high game stat, nor player skill) it is just a free bonus. You could as well just increase overall bow damage by 10%, would be about the same effect.

I also play with mods that make everything deal much more damage, maybe that's why I don't even need it. If I had marksman 100, agility 100, a good bow and some nice arrows I wouldn't need any bonus to kill enemies before they close the gap, at least not a single enemy or even two if I'm fast. If I made 3x bow sneak attack damage I could kill most things with one hit.

But of course all this is a matter of taste.

Ahh now I understand. That does make sense.

And thanks for your help. This mod will be easy! :P
