I'm more of a lore expert than game mechanics expert.

http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html ...maybe not though...I didn't actually read through to see if he has the answer, but I've found this guide incredibly helpful...be careful not to use it too much...you've been warned...

Gah, I really need help. I really want to enjoy this game, but it is too damn hard. I'm doing the quest for the one guy in Shady Sands where you have to kill the radscorpians, but they keep on killing me. My friend tells me it is because I am using the pistol I got in the beginning of the game. Is there any place where I can easily acquire a good weapon?

The Hub merchants have some pretty decent hardware for sale, but since you're at the beginning, cost might be an issue... Really tho, even the 10mm pistol is enough to deal with those scorpions - if you wanna play it safe (=cheap :P), you could always lure one or two of them near the edge of the map, and if they get too close for comfort, just exit via the map grid.

Or, depending on how much AGI (and thus, how many APs per round) you have, you could shoot once per round, then back off a bit. If done right, the scorpions never have enough action points to actually hit you after they've closed the distance.

*giggles*

It's similar to fighting wolves in Baldur's Gate at level 1 just after Candlekeep - run around like an idiot & shoot at them.

The tried and true attack method of any fledling RPG character! Attack once, then run away like a little girl.

Just don't make the mistake I did in Ultima when I stumbled into a campfire, couldn't get out, and watched in horror while my char helplessly burned to a crisp.

Hmm...have you investigated the cave wall near the entrance?

I say use your melee wepons first since it is hard to aim using your gun. Practice makes perfect, you'll get it as you play along

Have you tried going to Vault 15 yet? Go there, there's only rats and you might just find a way to improve your equipment there armor- and weaponwise.

It's also possible to simply blow up the entrance of the cave, though it requires some skill in Explosives.

Fallout is one of them unique RPGs that can be finished without combat. It even beats PS:T in that regard. Respect!

There's a
Spoiler
10mm SMG and Leather Jacket
in Vault15.. not far from you. You could also look for a partner in Shady Sands.

You can also
Spoiler
take along Ian and wipe out the raider camp to the south-east of Shady Sands. The boss wears metal armor & the normal bandits all wear leather armor... also lots of Magnums to loot. Ian should be able to kill them all pretty easily if your PC runs around and lures a couple of bandits away. For the rest... you can get a hunting rifle & shotgun for free in Junktown if you do a quest there.
