DVD Size...

No I was saying HD DVD would of been a viable option just for video games on the xbox 360 problem is the HD DVD player was never put into the 360 itself. Only a separate accessory to buy. Which means it isn't an option.

And as I stated Skyrim wouldn't be in the same linear format as ME2 and FFXIII so the multiple disk would be hard to do other than cutting the world in half and putting them on multiple disks.

Which wouldn't work since in Bethesda games the player is free to roam wherever from the start no matter how hard it may be.

Standard DVD is impressive and has life for movies and video games to come. But I agree it is getting hard for developers. I doubt many games will be impossible to fit before the next gen of consoles though.

Chances are very good that by the time 64bit is the standard runtime blue-ray will be the standard disk drive.

The Fallout 3 GOTY edition for 360 requires a hard drive, as the second disk is an installation disk, same as on PC. Frankly, I wouldn't rule this out if the game is that big. That said, compression tech gets better every year, and there's a decent chance it could still fit on a single disk with little to no visible difference (from the PS3, not PC). I'm more concerned with the frame rate staying smooth.

To be fair the second disk was DLC if I'm not mistaken. Well I'm not out on a harddrive install and good catch on the better compression tech.

I didn't talk about hdd specifically counting the core bundle players that don't have one. Then again a player trying Skyrim on a 360 would have a decent pile of games owned not to mention save files.

So maybe a second disk install will be viable. Who knows. Hopefully they can keep it all compiled onto one disk.

what? that logic doesn't even make sense? more vioces=less content? and there have been games on more than one disk and content is all on one ESM file, which really isn't even all that big

Audio files take a huge chunk of data storage. A chunk that could be used for more quests, etc. that uses less data storage than audio files. That's where that logic comes in. One mp3 song is ~ 3 Mb big (3 million bytes). One text letter takes up 1 byte. Think of how many words of text you can make with 3 million bytes. Far more than the mp3 audio file (length of a song) itself could sound out.

Nothing to worry about here, they'll figure out something smart.

Don't forget

More complex engine code
Higher res textures
Higher poly models
More shaders

As has been ther case around here a lot lately, you seem to be over estimating how much improvement there is going to be.

More complex engine code? More streamlined and efficient engine code is more likely. To be honest though it really doesn't matter because code and scripts take up a very small percentage of the overall disk... so even if it is soooo much more complex (it won't be), it really would not make a difference in game size.

Higher res textures? Yes, the textures will be higher detailed then Oblivion... probably on par was Fallout but not much better then that.

Higher poly models? Slightly higher yes, but not drastically higher.

Everyone seems to forget that the game is being built for the same systems as Oblivion and Fallout 3. There is only so much the 360 and PS3 are capable of and its irrational to expect everything in Skyrim to be so much better.
