I didn't really like it when I needed to buy a home. It was nice when you had the money to spare, but in my opinion they could have simply given you that shack near the waterfront (or just have it open to you for moving in).
I'd love to see more homes than just the one in each town though, ranging from abandoned hunter camps to maybe an ice castle (after clearing out the frost giant and his Riekling guards maybe).
I recall making a small mod that just had a tent with a bedroll, chest and campfire with a stool in the wilds south of Cheydinhall; just so my character could come across it and claim it as his/her own. Nothing fancy, but it felt good to have such places.
Unfortunately, TES4 made you reluctant about moving into a home because of the respawning loot. Not sure if this was just a rumor/lie, but I believe some people claimed that even chests in player homes were sometimes unsafe and would replace your items with common junk. One of the reasons I only used homes I've created personally or checked in the CS to see if they were safe. Better safe than sorry
