The empty room hung quiet. The building's rotting tinder's provided a nauseas smell strong enough to send a rat scurrying and the empty walls of the space, broken only by a door at one end, gave it an eerie, serious feel. The redguard, dressed in torn cloth and ragged denim, sat across from the wizard, whose face was completely covered by a shadow cast by a black hood. Only his wrinkled mouth, shaped into a twisted smile, could be seen.
The young man whimsically cleared his thought, waiting for the conversation to start. "I got the?" He had to restart the sentence. Such simple speech would not impress the old man seated in front of him. "I have received the parcel you have requested me to acquire."
Drat! The phrase sounded much more professional in his head. Now it just gave away how nervous he really was to meet the wizard again. But it would not change what was about to happen here.
"Good?" the warlock whispered. "I suspect it wasn't much trouble?"
"I broke into a home and killed a man for this!" the redguard yelled and slapped a small bound up scroll onto the table.
"So it wasn't. This letter will help me in the coming situation. I thank you for your assistance. After all, an old being like me is not able to take this all on alone." He picked the parcel off the table and slid it into a pocket on the side of his robe. Before he brought his withered hand up back onto the table, he flicked his fingers and sent a shower of hidden green sparks onto his partner. The boy's eyes grew unfeeling and blank.
"My friend, what do you think of this ordeal? I know you wouldn't tell the higher powers, but if you were not the ambitious lad I know you to be, would you run along and tattle to them? Answer me the truth."
"Oh, of course I would not rat you out, my master." The redguard's voice was empty and cold as he spoke, as if it was only wind in the silence of winter. "However, if I was stupid, I may go along and tell the first guard I see after this place is out of earshot."
"Oh, dear. Well, run along now. I will contact you at the next possible free moment I have."
The redguard stood up and opened the door. "I will be looking foreword to the day, my wonderful master. Until then, farewell." He left and shut the door behind him.
The wizard's smile grew more malicious. He cackled as he rapped on the rotten wall behind him in a sort of rhythmical signal.
The gears were set in motion. His final goal was not far off.
