Do we really have to be a dragonborne?

Post » Sun Aug 29, 2010 11:42 am

I don't see the point in making the player a destined last of their kind slayer of dragons. Unless dragons are supposed to be immune to everything ever made ever then why can't we just find a town, find out about a dragon harrassing it, stab it in the throat while screaming how we're Beowulf then toddle on? If dragons aren't just like any other creature where you just need a big enough stick to stab it then it's going to feel jarring to be able to fight dragons but lose to the town guards or will this mean that any companions we may have can't finish the dragons off we always have to use our finisher?

Basically I need to be convinced why dragons need a super special awsome person to kill them unlike every other creature in every other Beth game where anyone can poke a monster until it dies but it just happens to be able to poke back harder than most so people usually lose.

(Yes I know Akatosh is divine and it may be the enemy but either there's only one dragon in the game to fight or Akatosh may as well rename himself, Aku and the player, Jack.)

You need the ability to speak in their tongue in order to have any chance. A very rare skill as it turns out.

Similar to many story lines (Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Morrowind for example) I assume that you do not start out as a Dragonborn, but grow into your prophesied role after some peculiar escape/release from prison. It is a TES game so I doubt that you are going to be forced along the main quest. Although I would also guess that not goin along the main quest would mean less dragons.

Nope, you start the game as one of the last Dragonborns...

So yes, we have to be him. But honestly, I don't care. I want to have fun, not to complain over small details, as long as the game is fun and the main quest enjoyable. I am good!

Wait so you are saying that being dragon born is a draw back for you? This is a game and a story... You are in another persons idea of a story I don't understand the complaint with who you are. After all I didn't like the idea of being a prisoner but there I was with no choice. This is not a big deal.

You can probably spend the whole game avoiding the main quest if you like, like every other TES game.

Everyone must have forgotten it in the last 200 years....Dragonish was a skill in daggerfall XD

Im assuming there is some sort of twist for the reason why nobody else can get near a dragon to kill it.

Well dragons in the elder scrolls universe are extreamly tough to beat mainly because they are intelligent creatures and to beat them usually you need the right circumstances or outsmart them. There is 2 times I know of dragons being killed and both times it was because of the circumstances. cyrus the restless(hero of redguard) killed a dragon but only because he was able to face the dragon in an inclosed area where the dragon was at a disadvantage, but cyrus is also a formidable warrior and soon afther fighting the dragon became the hoonding(a redguard god) for a little while. the second time I can think of is in the battlespire when a dragon of the empire and it's rider where both killed mainly because they where in an enclosed area.

I too dont want to step into the shoes of Dovakiin..

what excites me most about skyrim is being able to live a simple, ordinary life in another world.

I care not for world saving shenanigans.

That is not a reasonable demand from the Elder Scrolls series. They have all been about saving the world or at least doing something dramatic to the world since their inception.

most elder scrolls game have been about being THE ONLY HOPE, THE CHOSEN ONE so i dont know why you complain about it being the same as before you should just have seen it coming miles away the games have always been like that

I feel like a Nord is best suited to saving Skyrim, anyway.

i'm sure once you get powerful enough you should be able to.. the special dragon abilities probably just 'help a lot'.

There seems to be some confusion on this subject. Here's how I see it. Dragonborn is a racial trait. It's not a race in and of itself, neither is it a class, but it separates you from other characters. It makes you a little more special than your character in Oblivion, but probably not as special as your character in Morrowind. In order to embrace your dragonborn heritage you will have to undergo the special training mentioned in the GI article. Alternatively (if you're anything like my characters from Oblivion) you can say "Screw this quest, Imma go raid some old forts." and leave the people of Skyrim to deal with the dragons on their own.

I don't care if it's a cliche or not and I don't want to be a side character either. I admit I'm not up to play on Elder Scrolls dragons but from every other source material dragons are immune to magic but very vulnerable to being stabbed several dozen times. Until I see the dragons in skyrim whip up snowstorms, avalanches and level cities it's my belief that any joe nord can fight a dragon once they level up enough. Maybe if the dragonborne has some kind of power to force the dragon into engaging in melee combat instead of raining fire it would make sense but until then... Eh, my Oblivion character could take them.

Yeah. You just had to be satisfied with being Head Sword Magister Champion of Death and Other People's Belongings.
