Random crashes

Post » Sun Aug 29, 2010 4:42 am

Hey all I have been playing oblivion for a while (on the xbox) so I decided to start playing it on the computer to check out mods etc.
So I downloaded MMM, OOO, Tamriel Traders, UOP, and that's it for the patches (as well as shivering isles), I thought that wasn't too crazy. And now I am just crashing randomly while playing, with no real set time, sometimes it's jumping in water, others walking up a hill. I minimized all my settings to basically levels where I don't want to tear my eyes out considering my rig isn't all that awful.
Specs:
BIOS - Default System BIOS
Ram - 4 GB
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz
Video Card - NVidia Geforce 9400 GT (drivers updated)
Sound Card - Realtek HD Audio Output (drivers updated?)
I haven't done anything crazy with overclocking (nothing at all actually), and I tried tweaking settings and sometimes it's 5 minutes of play, sometimes 50 minutes, but the same crash occurs. In the event log it looks like:

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, fault address 0x003d22d5.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any ideas on how to help? I have reinstalled/created new savegames

Edit: The type of crash is the game turns a bit black then the common error message comes up saying don't send or send error report bla bla bla, oblivion encountered some error. No reboot, no sound stuttering, no blue screen.

Post your Load Order by using Wrye Bash or OBMM. I would recommend trying reduced spawn rates, but I would also read the MMM release thread in Oblivion Mods to see if you are using esp's that are known to cause CTD's. OOO-Waterfish is an example.

Still crashes:
Load order:
Oblivion.esm
OOO.esm
MMM.esm
Tamriel's Travelers.esm
UOP.esp
Living Economy.esp
OOO.esp
DLC - Shivering Isles.esp
OOO Waterfish (NOT checked)
MMM for OOO.esp
MMM Spawn rates reduced (not checked)
MMM more wilderness life
Tamriel Travelers for OOO
Tamriel Travelers Item NPC

That's it, any problems with that? It still crashed.. I've tried changing the lighting from bloom to HDR to none, all still crash, tried changing the sound in the .ini, still crashes

Make sure all of your mods are up to date- MMM should be 3.7b3, OOO should be 1.34b5, You need the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch (USIP). The UOP is at version 3.3.4.
Place a check in spawn rates reduced and the rest in a house for three days to allow the game to reset, step outside and see if the crashes still happen. If the crashes still happen then uncheck MMM more wilderness life, wait in a house for three days and try again.
I do not use Tamriel Travellers, somone else might know if it can cause CTD's.

I think it may have been tamriel travelers, i disabled that and it has been running for an hour or so crash less, knock on wood. All the mods are updated, the spawn rates reduced thing i dont think causes it because the crashes aren't even near enemies in the wilderness, i could be walking etc. generally it's been jumping into water, but mobs haven't been really causing it. right now i think it was the travelers, but i just checked and unchecked the spawn rates, i dont think it affected anything because i unchecked it after a few days of play and it still crashed (while i had the travelers on)

Tamriel Travelers 1.39 is very stable.

I would put SI first in your loading order after Oblivion, itself. UOP should come next. There is also an unofficial patch for SI that you should check out.

There is a utility called Better Oblivion Sorting Software or BOSS, This utility will automatically place all of your esp/esm files in the correct Load Order. It is available from Planet Elder Scrolls and TESNexus. The utility will also provide a log with known issues for some plugins. While you are looking at BOSS, You could get Oblivion Mod Manager, OBMM makes adjusting a Load Order and activating plugins easier. The mods you are using are available as OMOD ready Archives(downloads) or packaged in an OMOD already. TheNiceOne has an OMOD installer for MMM, there is a link for most of these in the MMM release thread in Oblivion Mods. I wish I knew how to make links right now.

The help button in the upper right of OBMM will bring up the readme. It covers what OBMM does and has instructions for using features like Arcive Invalidation. Once you do get a stable playable game take a look at Cobl and OBSE, then give Wrye Bash a try. I wish I had started using Wrye Bash and BAIN sooner.
EDIT read your posts in Oblivion Mods, Enjoy modded Oblivion!!!

It's great other than the crashing lol, but I see that a lot of people get them fairly frequently. It's annoying because i can NEVER recreate them. Sometimes I crash on exit too, idk if that matters at all though

When you install OBSE, make a folder in your Data Folder called OBSE. Make a folder inside the OBSE folder called plugins. Download the OBSE plugin called FastExit_2 and place the Fast Exit 2.dll inside the plugins folder. This will fix the CTD when you quit the game.

Sounds like a plan, I hope the crashes thin out soon
