Buying a PC for Oblivion

Post » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:20 pm

Dear Oblivion Addicts,

I am trying to select a suitable PC configuration to be able to play a heavily/moderately modded Oblivion.
I don't know if Oblivion is RAM/CPU/VGA intensive, I try to select an equally balanced config.

I thought of a hardware like this:

-Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H as motherboard
-AMD Athlon II X2 250 3GHz as a dual-core CPU
-Kingmax 2GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
-VTX3D ATI Radeon HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 as VGA Card
-running on an LCD with 1280x1024 native resolution

If you have any suggestions, plz make it so that I could amend my desired PC config.
Thanx!

For a budget Rig that would be okay.

A faster dual core CPU, 4 GB of Memory and 1GB of Video ram would be optimal for the smoothest and most stable heavy modded Oblivion experience though.

-VTX3D ATI Radeon HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 as VGA Card If you are using a 17 inch screen I suggest that you go one model up like the ATI 5770. Just in case later on you decided you go for a bigger screen like a 22 inch wide screen.

Theres some fast and cheap GTX-460's around , i wouldnt consider any other card but a GTX460 as they so cheap for what you get at the moment . Always buy 3-4mb of ram , its so cheap theres no reason not too.

For gaming, I would not go any lower than 1080p monitor.

You might want a bit more RAM then that.
@OP What are you willing to spend on the PC? Can you build it yourself or must it be prebuilt?

Based on the components and the brands, this looks to be a mid-range gaming PC on a really tight budget.

I'm curious what this budget of yours is as well and whether you can build this PC yourself or not.

Im also in the process of looking at making a pc to play heavily modded oblivion and keep me busy until the release of skyrim. I have a sony bravia 32" 1080p tv in my front room, I want a tower beside it that can run games without fail, also has a bluray dvd drive, tv card and wireless mouse/keyboard/gamepad. Basicly i want it to take care of gaming, tv, music, bluray.

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything but interested in what people recommend spec wise. Im hoping to spend around £750 max

Gah...should've posted in your own thread instead of taking this one to ask. I suggest you still do so. That's a healthy budget. You should wait for the Intel's SandyBridge motherboards to come back onto the market in the coming probably couple weeks. For a brand new system with your budget, that is thee platform to be on as nothing can touch it right now considering the price for components.

Motherboards were recalled about a month ago due to the discovery of SATAII ports degrading over time, but the chipset has been revised and vendors should be ready soon to push them back onto the market.

In the meantime, open your own thread and restate everything you posted here.

Also, state whether you can build your own PC or need a pre-assembled one.

And I take it you probably need a Windows OS disc too. Speakers?

dont need speakers, dont need an os disc. wont bother with the new thread either, someones quoted me a price just short of £500 after finding these bundles on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOTHERBOARD-BUNDLE-16GB-DDR3-RAM-1055T-SIX-CORE-2-8GHz-/220744098807?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item33655fa3f7#ht_2729wt_700

thought id post in case the OP was interested. very nice bundle prices. theres also bluray disc drives on ebay for as low as £40. very reasonable

Not that great of a deal. Actually it's just not worth it. There are better things to spend on than 16GB of RAM...4GB is plenty already, 8GB is overkill already. Unless you do a lot of video rendering, video encoding, or Folding...2-cores of that 6-core CPU will go to waste. We're only now starting to see games making use of quads, let alone 6-cores. Oblivion hardly makes use of more than a single-core.

AMD socket AM3 will move onto AM3+ in Q2 of this year when Bulldozer releases....AM3 will be a dead-end route. Seriously, if you can wait then you should wait for at least Intel's Sandybridge to come back in full swing. If you must have AMD, then wait for Bulldozer. For a brand new system with a £750 budget, it should be one of those platforms....nothing else.
