Wrye Mash and alternatives

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 4:09 pm

I recently downloaded Wrye Mash to get used to trying to order my mods (I may have 1 out of order). Then I learned I needed to download a programming platform to use it. Is this program so great that it is worth downloading Python for just one program, or is there a good alternative that will run on its own in Windows 7? If Wrye is still the way to go, do I want to get the latest version of Python or do I need to find a legacy version?

Thanks!

This will interest you.

edit: well, needed, but it's all bundled.

and yes, you do need Wrye Mash if you plan on keeping your modded game healthy.

In addition to Wrye Mash, there are other popular tools used by the community that also utilize Python: Morrowind Code Patch and mlox, although both do come in self contained exe versions as well. Their purpose is different than Wrye Mash tho - MCP for patching bugs in Morrowind.exe; mlox for load order sorting and plugin update / compatibility recommendations.

The main advantage of using the non-exe versions is smaller download size, and the files taking up less harddrive space since you would already have the necessary Python support installed.

[edit] if you decide to install Python, then Wrye Mash needs at least Python v2.5 but others have it working with v2.6. MCP should work with either version; mlox needs a specific version of the wxpython support files.
