Trapped by MWE

Post » Sat Sep 04, 2010 3:54 pm

After installing the official plugins, I find my Morrowind Enhanced installation no longer works when loading a saved game. I get a brief shot of the saved game on screen (indicating it has loaded) and then a CTD with no error message other than the windows one telling me Morrowind has crashed.

Deactivating the official plugins doesn't help and I can't deactivate or uninstall MWE because then whenever I try to load a saved game I get the message 'Expression Error Unable to find dialogue id "MWE_LoadIndex" in script cid_demo." The only way I can get Morrowind to work is to run it with the MWE plugin but not MWE.exe running, which brings up that stupid "NOT loaded" message, and that worries me.

Is there a fix to the problem? And if not, how can I uninstall MWE? It doesn't look like it was designed to be removed.

If needed, the reason I got Morrowind Enhanced was to run Journal Enchanced, and I bulk installed all the official plugins except Entertainers, which I had already.

Deleting MWE shouldn't cause problems, if you don't run the game trough Morrowind Enhanced icon.

Well it does. It seems the remaining installation can't handle losing its precious demo script. Besides, I'm not entirely sure what to delete. I'm guessing it's the MWE dll, but is there anything else?

If I remember right, MWE only works, if you launch game while MWE is running. If so, MWE has an exe, data files and something else. All must be deleted. YOu can download it again and see, what files it contains, and then delete these files.

Nope, deleted the exe, dll and the Data Files and the game's still hankering after its demo script.

Does doing a "repair all" on the save game with Wrye Mash help?

By the modlist, you haven't yet deleted plugins. Either delete them or disable them before launching a game. Ugh, I hope it helps.

I posted the modlist before I tried your idea. I deleted the plugins to try, but restored them when it didn't work.

Sorry, I'm not doing that. There's no guarantee Morrowind would work again after being reinstalled.

Trying is better than nothing and mostly helps. But yeah, it's your shot. :) Good luck in resolving the problem tho.

If you don't mind using a little command line program, you could try http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Tes3cmd?ts=1280597826&updated=Tes3cmd (get the latest .exe version from the http://code.google.com/p/mlox/downloads/list page).

A command like this executed in "Data Files" will show if some remaining plugin references that MWE script:

tes3cmd dump --type scpt --id cid_demo *.esm *.esp

or, execute this in "Saves" to see if the lingering reference is in your savegame:

tes3cmd dump --match MWE_LoadIndex MYSAVE.ess

If the output is too voluminous, try adding "--list" to just list the IDs of matching records.

Really not comfortable with command line, sorry.

Understandable, you are not alone in that respect.

There is also an application called http://www.inforapid.de/html/searchreplace.htm that allows you to search for strings in files, including binary files like ES plugins. You could use it to search for the script name or the MWE_ string to see if you missed a plugin that depends on MWE.

AHA! ZoomFunctionDemo.esp uses script cid_demo! I'll try uninstalling that and see if it helps.

Yes! It worked! But it would still be nice to know what the original problem was. I quite liked Journal Enhanced.

Maybe you can try re-downloading MWE + Journal Enhanced. :) Of course, you can copy your morrowind folder and use the newly downloaded files on the copied morrowind. :)

I could try that, but since the game worked fine without the MWE.exe running I think that's probably the source of the problem.

I see what your error message said, but there's one plugin with 'demo' in the name that is MWSE based. Are you using both MWE and MWSE? You do know there's a difference, don't you?
Also, be sure to ditch THE_UNDERGROUND_2.esp. You are using UG2PhaseC_v06.esp which, though not finished yet, should be a heck of a lot better. It is not just a patch, it is a full mod upgrade and you don't want to run two versions of the same mod. Also be sure to date the Sanity Globe so it loads after UG2PhaseC_v06.esp.

I have the same problem as you....

A while back ago I had it with MWE wich I mostly had for Horatio's NPC enhanced....

then the game crashed withouth error after having been loaded and heard and seen a shot of the game...

I then switched to MWSE with a patch for NPC enhanced wich made it MWSE friendly... I also took the Pursuit enhanced mod...

But after a while the problem is back again, now with MWSE.... but I just don't want to lose those two mods wich are way to precious for me...
If there would be a fix I would be delighted.
