Confused about the menu

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 11:18 am

First I have to say that the GI magazine looks AWESOME and I'm really exited! But on the page describing the menus I got pretty confused. There were 4 options, skills, inventory, map and magic.
But what about quests, status (attributes, possible FO-like limb dmg and stuff, and fame/infame etc.) and other informations? I'll the pretty angry if there isn't even some information about your character other than skills. I want a karma system!
But the lack of quests in the menu could possibly be a very good thing if it were done like in Morrowind with the journal where u got the quest informations.
But what do u guys think? Is there a good answer to all this?

I didn't get to see the article yet but hopefully Mr. Howard will change it to be more like DarnifiedUI instead of the garbage it currently is.

They showed the skills menu and that looked like it was only skills and not other stuff. But of course it can be changed..

Well, in Oblivion there was four as well:
  • The Character page showed your skills, attributes, and those things
  • The Inventory page... well, that's the inventory.
  • The Magic page gave you an overview of your spells and scrolls.
  • The Map/Quest page let you see your quests and use the map.

I suspect it will be similar in Skyrim.

I suspect the same. I mean if anything Oblivion's UI was cumbersome at best. The UI in Skryim looks similar to Oblivion's, with different pages representing different things, the sliding over to access the sub pages. But at the same time it's more attractive looking and probably better streamlined.

The skill menu showed name, level (and progress), race, skills (obviously), life, magicka and fatigue.

I'm afraid that ARE all stats that still exist.

If you read the GI article, you will notice that they talk a lot about this "Log" often where details about quests, locations and stuff you do are stored there.

Just like Morrowind it might be a separated menu from the right-click character menu. On PS3, the controls could be "Select" for the Log, and "Start" for the character menu? And something similar to the 360. On PC, "J" or "L" (Journal or Log), and Tab for the character menu.

Correction.

Skyrim have a similar menus as Oblivion, but with more annoying animations.

Start pauses the game, select brings up the wait menu. That's how it worked for oblivion. Fallout 3, and new vegas.

How did morrowind work on the xbox? What button brought up the journal and what button brought up the inventory? That should give us a better idea.

You've seen skyrims menu animations and have determined that?

@vincent what buttons on the 360 controller correlate to the black/white on the original? All the buttons for oblivion were mapped to a specific action so what button would they free up to be able to split the menus and the journal to two separate buttons?

Edit: I see morrowind used the same button for melee/magic where as they were mapped to two separate buttons in oblivion. So unless the do that again there won't be a free button to use to have menus and journal separated.

Hmmm, well. I didn't play the PS3 or 360 versions so I was just making an assumption. But I believe they will make it work somehow.

I love how much trust you have in Bethesda Game Studios - creators of one of the best RPG series in the world - to not **** up their own creation. I also love how you waited to see it in action before calling it garbage.

Oh wait...

I'm sure quests will just be in a tab of the map section, or even the skills/character section. Don't sweat it. The GI article hardly covered everything.
