A Wanamingo? Seriously the Vault just says their FEV exposed monsters or "Aliens" depending who you asked in fallout 1/2.
Anyone know exactly wtf these things are supposed to be? Finally looked into it and found out floaters are flat worms but no description on what they used for these freaks.

From Fallout Bible 0, by Chris Avalone

The wannamingos are a result of FEV virus experiments, but they are sterile. They are not aliens, but word is they were designed as FEV-tailored weapons for waging war on other countries... and they got loose. They do live a long time, but they were dying out at the time of Fallout 2. They have only been sighted in the F2 area and nowhere else in the wastelands.

We're not sure what a Wanamingo used to be.

It's sorta like the Deathclaws; unless the NPC/Data came out in FO2 and said "It's a FEV-mutated Jacobson Chamelion" we would have no idea what it used to be. It's likely that we will never know what a Wanamingo used to be unless Bethesda dredges them back out.

Which will in turn cause a "Bethesda ignores the established lore" argument of course...

It does say that they've only ever been sighted in the vicinity where FO2 transpires

Honestly they need not reappear in FO4 or 5 if it stays on the East coast ~but might plausibly make a last gasp appearance in FO:New Vegas ~it also says they started dying out 30+ years ago, so there's not likely many (or any) left.

If I can remember my playing days on fallout 2, there was a mine, called the Wanamingo mine and the critters were similar to mole rats, don't quote me. I haven't played that game in ten years, but thats what I can remember. Also seemed like the miners were hooked on jet too.

I'd have to say an FEV caused mutation. While there were some creatures similar to aliens, I think that was more in reference to their appearance from the movie Aliens. FEV caused some really strange mutations, Pig Rats, Mole Rats (Which in FO3 are described as being a Bioweapon) and of course, the Deathclaw. If that virus can something that fits in the palm of your hand to a towering 7 foot tall killing machine, anything is possible. Probably some kind of single cell ameoba that got a dose.

Deathclaws weren't made by FEV.

Play FO2 again. They upped the dose to make them smart, but ultimately they were created by it. Also read th research logs from "The Glow" in FO1. It explains the changes that happens for other animals, exactly the same as the Deathclaws turned out.

Those were the talking deathclaws. The original deathclaws were created pre-war by normaly genetic-engineering Jackson chameleons and mingling them with various other species. The Enclave afterwards managed to mutate them with FEV, and that was the first and only time FEV was involved with them.

You know, I do apologise. After going through my notes, I found out I was completely off. So I apologize. But I still stand by my statement that if the FEV can create things like the Super Mutants and what not, than it can do almost anything.
By the way, I always wondered: In FO1. the end scene I got had the Vault Dweller walking off into the Sunset with a messed up arm. FEV or Radiation? (On a side note, my cousin always got the same scene, but with no messed up arm. Wierd).
