Timeslip's .exe Optimizer Woes

Post » Thu Sep 09, 2010 3:50 am

I'll be brief. I did a clean reinstallation of Morrowind and am trying to get Timeslip's http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/exeopt.html working, although I've had limited success. The original documentation says that it's only been proven to work on an installation with the latest Bloodmoon patch, although the lack of updates and forum threads pretty much suggest that they still work fine with the Morrowind Code Patch. Backing up my original patched executable of Morrowind, I figured I'd have to try optimizing the file both before and after applying the MCP to see which one worked properly.

First, I decided to try using it on my executable without the Code Patch applied. "Access to the path sse.exe is denied." I tried this again a second time right before starting this thread (so that I could get the message verbatim) and instead got a path error for fpu.exe. So then I try running it after applying the Code Patch, and get another error concerning fpu.exe, although this time it gives the entire path "The process cannot access the file "C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\fpu.exe" because it is being used by another process.

Maybe I'm just missing something obvious here, but could somebody help me out? My processor is a Pentium 4, a bit dated but I'm almost certain that it would have SSE capabilities.

It has something to do with benchmarking or something. Read the helpfile that comes with it. It has the answer.

Edit: Scratch that, I thought it said how to fix it in the readme but I can't find it. I know that you just need to check or uncheck some box somewhere in exeopt, it's a really easy fix. I'm going to try searching for my old thread on this and see if i can dig up the solution.

I had that problem. I changed the CPU affinity so it works on one cpu/thread/core. That solved the errors for me on my dual core CPU. I don't know if my solution works for your CPU too.

Use one of the pre-made patches instead, and use it -after- the code patch. My main computer doesn't have the sse issue, but one pc I just did an install on does and I found out this was the best course of action. Works fine.

I can't recommend doing this, it may overwrite parts of the MCP patch to make them work like original Morrowind.

Possible, but I'm fairly certain I have noticed every single change I've applied in action. I could do a full test on the sooner side of sometime.

As the main rule states: never ever install anything to "Program Files" folder if you're running Vista or Win Se7en. ;)

Well, I decided to take a shot in the dark and disable the benchmarking as Pjstaab mentioned. It worked, although I'm curious as to if this means not all clusters were rewritten to their full potential.

But of course. I'm on Windows XP! :P
