Hi all,

I did the quest (Misdirection) but forgot to place the note in the nightstand where I replace the Ice Staff after speaking with Methredhel

Now I'm unable to get the next Thieves Guild quest. Is there any way to fix this?


I'm afraid I don't have a save that will take me back far enough.

I tried to place the note but the desk won't open up. The Ice Staff was back there as well so that tells me the quest was done. But the note is still in my inventory but isn't labeled as a quest item.

S'Krivva who gives thief quests isn't offering the quest "Lost Histories" which should be next. I have more than enough items fenced to qualify for this one.

If you didn't place the note when you stole the IceStaff, you wouldn't have got any further with the quest, so I'll assume you somehow got more than one instance of the note The game removes one, not all you have, when you activate the nightstand, so you can have a copy left over in your inventory.

Did you drop the staff off in Ontus Vanin's chest, or take it back to the Archmage's quarters where you got it? You have to return it the right way for the quest to advance.

You don't leave a note when you return the staff; you leave it when you take it. The questline sequence:



My best guess would be one of the following:

A. you have not actually completed the "Misdirection" quest - perhaps activating the nightstand will remove the note from your inventory (activating the nightstand should remove it if it is still active)
B. you might have a plug-in running that conflicts with that script (assuming you are on PC rather than a console)
C. you have not fenced sufficient loot to send you to S'krivva and the "Lost Histories" quest - it's 400 or 500 gold, I think

Perhaps you have completed the Mages Guild questline and removed the note from the nightstand? Unless something changed it somewhere along the line, the note remains flagged as a quest item even after the quest completes, You can't remove it from your inventory, hence the need for a script to do it for you.
