Actually, no. A 3x3 "hollow square" only needs 8 cubes. 4x4 needs 12, 5x5 needs 16, etc., so you need 4n-4 cubes for an n-sided hollow square.

doh, yeah that's right. However, assuming that he wants his pyramid to end with a single block on top, he can't use even numbers.

let me see if I got this right. With a 127x127 base he'd need 4*127-4 cubes for the base perimeter? So that's 504 cubes? :huh:

Assuming it's hollow, your volume would be [(127*127*64)/3] - [(125*125*63)/3] = 15960 square blocks. Now, since we're working blocks not smoothe edges, this'll be slightly off.
