So how's that water?

Heya folks, I made a post similar to this 6 months ago, intending to get Fallout 3 but that sadly this project was postponed until today. Things seemed rather quiet back then, but 6 months is enough for any internet community to turn around. My question is this:

How active is the Fallout 3 modding community? Things seem fairly active on this forum, but I'm wondering if its too late to start modding Fallout 3. Afterall its been out for over a year now. Nothing worse than putting months of effort in a series of quests only to have two people play it because the community died down. (NWN :()

On one hand, I have experience with the engine itself, though it is incredibly rusty. I used to mod for Oblivion back in 2006-2007.

On the other hand, games been out for over a year. I dread wasting time.

If I joined the community, I would intend to work on quest/mission mods as I'm a big fan of storytelling and am constantly overwhelmed with ideas when I play FO3.

So, whats the consensus? Is it worthwhile to start modding the game?

The Fallout 3 modding community has always been smaller than Oblivion's, but it is still very much alive.

And the GECK has some pretty cool new/improved features compared to the Oblivion CS so I say go for it. :)

Once I get a stable 32 compacity server setup, i bet with custom content support, multiplayer will bring many people to fallout 3 again. just my opinion. so it isn't too late, practice now and maybe i can recruit you later on

Yea, I figured it would be smaller. Not necessarily a bad thing, as I recall from my time over there.

Having the game, I think I'll give it a try anyways.

Edit: Oh and Nilla, kudos on the multiplayer mod. I agree that its going to breath new life into the game.

I'll get to scrapping the rust away this week.

Quick question!

Are there some websites out there with tutorials? If so, could anyone yield a link?

Similar to the Oblivion CS wiki, there's a http://geck.gamesas.com/index.php/Main_Page

I only started modding for FO3 about 2 month ago myself, so I can't tell you much about how community activity changed over the time. However, as a reference you might take FWE 5.0 which was released about a week ago, with already 5000+ downloads. So I guess there are at least more than 2 people around :D
Personally, I find FO3 very close to the "perfect" game (unlike oblivion, which i loved too, but where the combat system never really worked for me) and modding it to add features which I feel are still missing for my personal perfect gameplay expierience is just great fun :)

Yea I tend to agree with you about Fallout 3, I very much adore the setting and mechanics. BAR Aliens. I have hate the aliens and feel they hurt the overall setting. v_v

I'm fast coming up with ideas for an interesting and active questline. I'll post about it at a later date, right now I need to scraqe away all the rust. I need to pretty much relearn modding with this engine.

Geez, you couldn't find a more original handle? It's almost identical to mine, there's bound to be confusion in people's minds.

No offense, but you might want to look up my join date and compare it to your own before wagging that finger at me. No need to be so hostile about a nickname, especially when I took it up before you did.

Regardless, I'm sorry for the confusion and will see about contacting an admin. I do not mind changing my handle if they will allow it.

Well you have a point there, but it's not like you've been active all that time. I've been pretty active both here and over at the Oblivion forums since I joined and a number of people have come to know me fairly well.

I'd appreciate that, and it's rather big of you to consider it.

This is confusing to me.

If you want to mod the game, I would think you should just do it. What you do is not dependent upon the existance of any community. If you want something, it is never a wasted effort.

I do not personally percieve a community here. I primarily find the GECK board helpful for tech stuff. I've made some acquaintances. Its helpful to have a RELz thread here. So, yeah..

It sounds like you want to make mods so I think you should do it. There is no consideration of 'wasting time' if this is something you want.

People still create DOOM levels and it's considerably older than Fallout 3.

No worries.

They answered that they don't allow it, but I'll just go ahead and create a new account when I start posting information about my mod. Keeping the name's just gonna be a lose-lose situation anyway you want to cut it and I'm not about to twist anyone's arm into changing their handle.

I think you should keep it how it is. It's way funnier like this.

Besides, I don't think people will really care that much whether they think you are the other guy or not. Alternatively why not just choose an avatar which means people will instantly be able tell the difference between you in the rare instances that your posts are close together.

What other people think is irrelevant, the point is that I'll care. And if Belenos is planning on releasing a mod, there could be constant confusion between us. I have a mod of my own as well, so people are going to constantly get us mixed up. I don't think he'd like me taking credit for his work, and I certainly don't want it the other way around.

That pretty much sums it up. With a new avatar, regulars could pick us apart soon enough but infrequent visitors or people who have questions concerning our mods could be thrown off by the similar names. Its mostly harmless to just change the name now. I don't care for my post count or feel particularly attached to a name I used 4-5 years ago.

I certainly don't want to be explaining to someone that they have the wrong person when they ask a question about some mod. That would get annoying really quick. And I have something that I'm just waiting for some scripts for before I upload it, and I doubt you'd appreciate having to go through that process as well.

Return to Fallout 3
