No luck

How come I never get the choice of raising my luck when I level up? Do I need to raise some specific skills to unlock my luck (no pun intended)?

You ought to be able to raise Luck every level. Every character, no matter the class or choice of skills, can place 1 point into Luck at level-up.

Are you saying the game will not allow you to put even one point into Luck? If so, there is something seriously wrong. Are you on PC? If so, are you using mods?

Pseron is right. Because luck does not 'govern' any skills, you can only ever raise it by 1.

I just don't recall seeing it as an option anywhere. Maybe I'm missing it, but all I've seen with a +anything next to it are my stats but no luck. I'll pay more attention next time I guess *shrug*

Should be below personality. You can only increase luck by 1 though, no bonuses for it unless you use mods.

If I recall, you won't see a + beside it. But you can still select it.

Raising luck by 1 every time you level up is a very, very good idea.

Take my word on that one. I always maximize luck with all my characters and have a better playing experience as a result.

It's just wrong to have an attribute that becomes less important every time you level. Luck is bad!

Brilliantly put and heartily endorsed, my friend! :goodjob:

Since I cap my characters around level 20, I can't screw around with +1's to unimportant attributes. Luck - never touch the stuff.

This. But not always. It depends on the RP and character.

I don't see how http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Luck, as a ten point increase will raise all other skill levels to +4 (with the exception of a few). A powerful multiplier for some classes and RP types.

I don't mean to belabor the topic, but I feel it needs to be said.

I don't raise Luck after chargen is finished. It makes sense to me that a character would become stronger by swinging a Warhammer or faster by running. That a character could make a conscious choice to become luckier makes little sense to me. In my opinion, raising Luck once a game is underway is a meta-game mechanic.

The way I see it - and I am looking at this from a roleplayer's perspective - some of us are born lucky and some of us are born unlucky. And our luck may change over the course of our lifetimes. But it is not under our control. We play the cards we are dealt in life and, in my opinion, if we are roleplaying our characters should do the same.

I agree that it is worthwhile to review and understand what luck does and how it affects skills so players can choose whether to level it or not. For me and the way I play however, it is indeed unimportant.

All the skills my character wants to use will get to 100. The luck bonus does no good at that point, so at my character's top level (which is what I build for), luck becomes unimportant. So, rather than spending a slot bumping an attribute by +1 that becomes unimportant later, I would prefer to use that attribute gain slot at level ups to push +5's to an attribute that I consider important. In my case, since I will not level beyond 20, I only have 19 level ups to build attributes - so each level up really has to count. To me, luck represents an 'oportunity lost' investment that may help early on, but would become useless to me later. Ymmv of course.

So, I don't care about trying to build diminishing skill bonuses. And of course, I don't care about Mehrune's Butterknife Razor or betting in the Arena. ;)

Those who want that early skill bonus and/or have the flexibility that going to high character levels (+45) provides may well consider luck. :)

It's +.4 to skills for every point of Luck over 50. Thing is: 1) much of the incentive for raising skills is to get the perks. Luck does absolutely nothing for that. 2) While a skill of, say, 34, for a lvl 1 MAY be noticeably better than 30, the difference between 65 and 61 is much less noticeable. Luck has diminishing returns and it comes at a high price, although the price is lower if your offerred attribute raises are +2 or even +1 and/or your character isn't interested in spellcasting so doesn't want a birthsign that would boost his magicka pool.

When it comes to picking favored attributes, Luck is arguably a good choice, a sort of Best Buy.

I usually take Luck as a favored attribute during character generation to get that extra +5 to it off the bat. Once and a while I will take the Thief birthsign with it, to start with a Luck of 65. But I do not push it up after that. Although I rarely play characters beyond 15th level, so I almost never get one skill to 100, let alone many of them.
