Skyrim Blizzards Inflict Frost Damage?

Post » Wed Sep 22, 2010 12:59 am

wouldnt it make skyrim more realistic but not that annoying? blizzards inflict 0.01 points of frost damage per second for creatures, npcs that dont have frost resistance? i expect nords in skyrim to be immune to frost damage

How's about instead it has to do with your armor and/or enchantments? Wearing metal armor might protect you from a sword, but it'll turn you into a giant ice statue in no time flat, where as fur armor might be weak, but it's highly resistant to the cold, and will keep you warm.

If they don't do that, I just hope they have a hardcoe mode with a gauge that measures your core temperature. Fall too much, and you'll die of hypothermia. Rise too high, and you'll die of hyperthermia (it'd also make fire and frost a hell of a lot more dangerous).

I'd rather not have it, it would become frustrating with time...

As long as blizzards are rare.

No thank you. All other races besides Nords would be at a large disadvantage as a large portion of Skyrim is cold and snowy.

It could create some interesting situations, if fur clothing/armor or enough magic based cold resistance would be needed in certain areas to avoid cold damage - same could basically go for going too much south in desert areas and one would need to have heat resistance or light enough gear (though, that wouldn't fit too well for Skyrim anymore).

Either rare, or none at all. I feel like this idea is trying too hard to make the game ultra realistic, and would probably just end up making it unplayable in the end (especially the core temperature thing)
I'd rather have blizzards affect visibility instead, and make going through them into a sort of puzzle like the path to the Spirit Temple in Ocarina of Time.

Wouldn't Nords have it too easy, and Bretons and Orcs if it counts as magic damage. Unless weather resistance was one of the perks you can take. And it would have to level up, at level 1 you,re in a cold part of the map, at level 20 you can reach the ruin on the other side of the ice storm. Would be cool if there was a hardcoe mode FNV style.

I'm simply for blizzards, (visuals). It's been done in Morrowind, I'm sure it can be done in Skyrim.

LOL, setting myself on fire would actually make sense then instead of just trying to raise destruction level

I'd love this. Blizzards should be very dangerous. I also like the idea to base it on the type of clothing/armor being worn.

I definitely agree that some gameplay mechanic for extreme cold / hypothermia etc. is quite plausible - maybe the 'hardcoe mode' that some people are predicting. Make it involve your race to some extent (Nords have cold resistance etc.) to some degree, and how heavy your clothing is - and make Frost Shield a very useful spell ;)

This sounds like a neat idea. Normally as long as you wear clothing the cold should not effect you, but if you wear light clothing or a blizzard rolls in then you should need shelter.

Let me get this straight. You have to stand there for 100 seconds to take 1 point of damage? Why even bother?

I've been pushing this idea for a long time. I'm all for it. It probably won't happen.

A much preferable system would be one in which blizzards are actually highly dangerous, regardless of level (although higher level characters would be more likely to have some sort of spell or other means to preserve body heat).

Personally, I'd like to see The Elder Scrolls move away from the simplistic 'hit point' system.

Neverwinter Nights (Hordes of the Underdark) has an area where you take constant cold damage if you stray too far from heat sources. Earthbound has a similar situation in a desert where you need damp towels to cool off.

What alternative to hit points do you propose?
