Okay, so I am playing Oblivion for the first time :turtle: and I have this really stupid problem: I cannot put away my weapon. In the tutorial section, whether I attack the rats with my fists or sword...that's it, I'm stuck. The key that is supposed to pull out and put away the weapon doesn't put it away. Nothing happens.

If I go to my inventory and try to switch weapons, I get an error message that I can't switch while attacking. Except I'm not attacking and no enemies are near.

I have tried remapping the key for this but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Swing your weapon/fists/whathaveyou, let the animation complete, then try and change weapons.

Attempted, but no effect: my fists or sword remain in the ready position.

Note that when I say "I am not attacking", I haven't done anything special to "not attack". My weapon is ready and I can't put it away. If there is some undocumented command...

Playing on PC with Win XP SP3

1.Are you using any mods?
2.If you answered yes to # 1, then what are the mods.
If you are using the two disc GOTY edition with both discs installed then you should not need an Official Patch, I would recommend not using anything but the Unofficial Patches on your first play. Remember to make a saved game before you exit the sewers and enter the game. You can use this save to change your character without having to redo the entire tutorial dungeon.

This is a one disk install. I have not installed any updates. I tried the last official update but it wouldn't install (some sort of message about not finding a file).

If you do NOT have Shivering Isles, you want the oblivion patch only. (non-SI). Make sure you grab the one for your correct region as well.

Try dropping the weapon - on the inventory list, press Shift, left-click the weapon to drop. Or reload a saved game.

There are weird glitches in the game. I patched my game, and 2 years after first playing, I'm still seeing glitches I haven't seen before, such as getting out of water and not being to run or jump as if I'm still under water.

Already tried the dropping of the weapon. I get the same "can't while attacking" message.

Interesting development:

I tried NOT equipping any weapon until I picked up the rusty bow. Strangely, I can now pull out and put away weapons as one would expect. BUT what I can't do now is block whereas I could do it before when I couldn't put away a weapon. :banghead:

I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling. Can you be more specific about what patches to install? I don't have SI (although I do have Kinghts of the Nine but I haven't tried installing it yet) and I'm not sure which version of Oblivion Is actually installed since there doesn't seem to be a way to tell (which is stupid). :brokencomputer:

In the main loading screen in the lower left corner is the version you currently have. You will need the patch for your language/region if the number is not 1.20416.
As HeyYou stated, If you do not have Shivering Isles, You want the Oblivion only patch.
