Cant install mods

Post » Fri Sep 24, 2010 3:57 am

So I have morrowind for the xbox and really enjoyed it. So I decided to get it for the computer so I could further extend my experience with mods.

heres my problem:
I have no problem running single-filed .esp's and .esm's, but when I try to install larger mods with textures, meshes, etc. the game is messed up, but its hard to explain. For example, All of the stilt rider prices rise from like 15 gold to like 400 gold. And when I wait it was stuff like "sRestIllegal" and everything has a "s" infront of it, like "sWait" and "sCancel". Also my attributes and skill are like that, and it says stuff like "attributeStrength" and "skillLongBlade". It goes back to normal if I uninstall the large mods.

It's really strange, and I am completely clueless as of what to do. If anyone could help me, that would be greatly appreciated!!!

What kind of mods are you using, exactly?

oh just random ones, like one that adds a herbalism skill and one that adds and furniture store and others. They all create the same problem

Maybe you're installing them wrong? Any mods that have custom-named files within Textures/Meshes/etc. stay in those files. Could be why it's replacing nicknames. For example, Tamriel Rebuilt has "TR" Filenames that are placed within the original Textures/Meshes folders.

If that's not it, maybe the mods are just badly designed. What're the exact names of them?

Looks like you installed a dirty mod. Try cleaning it with TESTOOL (use restricted cleaning options).

Edit: The text with "s" in front of it comes from GMSTs (Game Settings). One or more of the mods you have installed have incorrect values for these GMSTs, they should not be in the plugin, so you need to remove them. There are lots of ways to remove GMSTs. TESTOOL might work, but you might also want to try a tool that has more control like TESAME or escog.

Or, you could just remove the plugin that has the problem. If you got the plugin from PES, often it will say on the dlownload page or in the comments if the mod is dirty.

But many times it doesn't, too.
The best habit a player can get is to check every single mod for GMSTs after downloading.

I dont think it's because the mod im downloading is dirty, because it has happened to every mod I have download (that are single .esp's or whatever). I have downloaded them all from either PES or tesnexus.

What exactly should I look for if I install a tool like TES tool?

edit: I have uninstalled and reinstalled morrowind many times, with no luck.
Also is the GMSTs just the morrowind.ini file?

Yes, it most definitely is because of a mod with dirty GMSTs. Clean them out with http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=utilities.detail&id=34, just like john.moonsugar explained.
Re-installing the game will not help f you still use the same dirty mod.
It's unlikely that all your mods are dirty, but one you keep using sure is.

1. Once you have TESTool installed and open, go to options and it's recommended to tick "Restricted Dialog" and "Restricted Cell" ("Don't change Plugin name" is also handy) then click Done.
2. With "Clean esp/esm" highlighted, click Execute.
3. Then find the folder with your mods and open (double click on) the esp you want to clean.
Now it will be cleaned.
Repeat steps 2-3 for all your mods.

Avoid using the "Just Fix It button." It's been know to cause problems.

Just to be sure I understand, you've reinstalled Morrowind from scratch, with no mods, and you still have the strange text strings beginning with "s" showing up?

If you do have some mod plugins activated, it would be good if you could http://sites.google.com/site/johnmoonsugar/Home/getting-help-with-morrowind.

Its looking like its working now! that GMSTs site you gave me helped. I just deleted all my old saves and started a new game, as I installed the expansions halfway through my character. And I clean all mods with testools. Thanks again for the help!
