The term "must have" is very vague, since all of us use different mods.
This thread will be of great help to you, providing you with links to other peoples favourite mods, and categorized mods, among other things.

There's this mod called The Sable Dragon...don't remember who made it...but it's definitely a must-have mod ;).

Yeah, I heard that one was quite the adventure! Maybe it's on one of those obscure, hard to find sites.
And I heard some crazy dude released a 2D playable dinosaur thing. And he, like, fought some Power Rangers?

Pluto made it and it's really a must have mod made for characters level 2-5. It's located on the way to Balmora from Seyda Neen.

he was being sarcastic if you didn't notice since he mentioned his own mod

and anyway, sable dragon is a definate yes! and why not play it while playing as a 2D dinosaur dragon thing? i think it makes sense :P

anyway i highly suggest both the sable dragon and Jeff's 2D dino mod. i mean who doesnt want to fight power rangers as a 2D dinosaur with a lightsaber?

If you want a MASSIVE new landmass, might I suggest Tanriel Rebuilt? (www.tamriel-rebuilt.org)

*ahem*
Seriously, though, you at least need http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=213 and http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6173 to get started. The rest depends on your playing style, what your personal preferences are.

I've said this before, but to me the only absolute must-haves are Morrowind Code Patch and Morrowind Patch Project (whatever the latest versions are now). Beyond that it's a matter of personal taste: what's most important to you?

BTW, the Wrye Mash link is busted in that thread, Pluto. I suppose I can google for it. Is it really that useful though? It sounds very complicated. <_<

it is not only useful but really necessary if you don't want to screw up your game and your saves.

once you been through it, you don't want to miss it anymore.

here is one http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27588. there is also a standalone version which i could not find that fast.

This. Surely TR has to be considered must-have. It's like the whole of Morrowind, only better.

Other than that there's Better Bodies, Morrowind Code Patch, Morrowind Patch Project and Morrowind Graphics Enhancer. Those are probably the only mods that can be considered must have by all.

I never play the game without MGE (Morrowind Graphics Extender) The Morrowind Visual Pack, Better Bodies, Better Heads, Unofficial Morrowind Patch, and Code patch. Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever :P

They are all truly must have as The Greatness said above

I wouldn't call Better Heads or The Morrowind Visual Pack real must haves when there are plenty alternative mods available for both as well.

Follow the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1060141-mod-recommendations-for-new-players/page__p__15392814__fromsearch__1&and you'll see this section:

I need better graphics!!!
Probably the best place to start is the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1103737-add-to-the-list-of-needed-graphics-mods/page__p__16150079__fromsearch__1&#entry16150079 thread. It's very current and concise, that also includes a section on MGE links.
Another great thread is the http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=956115
Here you will find many links to many new textures avialable, and lots of information on using mods in general.
Separated into categories:
  • http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=956115&view=findpost&p=13811812
  • http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=956115&view=findpost&p=13811822

[!]If you use Better Bodies you'll be wanting some better heads to match, so there is the handy http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=994490&hl= thread.

You can also manually search through the Textures section on PES, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.List&category_select_id=13 to find many of the excellent replacers that improve the visuals.

A large list of World Texture replacers can also be found at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:World_Replacers section of the wiki.
http://web.archive.org/web/20080514081136rn_1/ltm.ufrealms.net/textpacks/ and http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/X-Calibar/Morrowind/Textures/Chart/ are both very good ways to see world textures compared.

Tons of info and links for you to improve your graphics.

Sure, I just threw in a good one. Point being that a head/hair, and a body replacer, is pretty damn necessary.
