I just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for the wealth of information. During my time off this week, I had some quality time in the office.. an Oblivion installation vacation, I guess.
Monday night, for about 10 minutes: Bumped my RAM from 3GB to 8GB.
Tuesday afternoon: Finally decided which 50 or so mods I want. (subject to change, of course)
Tuesday night: Backed-up my personal files from Vista-32 & downloaded key software for the next day.
Wednesday afternoon & evening: Installed Vista-64. Installed my programs, tweaked the system.
Thursday morning: Framed map of Cyrodiil and hung it on my office wall. Slept.
My mini-Oblivion project vacation finally ended with one doozy of a Thursday night/Friday morning. The installation process began around 4PM, just as the forums here went down. Many mistakes were made, many uninstalls and re-installs performed. Lots of order-of-installation issues, missing files, system freeze-ups.. you name it, and it went wrong! Around 10PM, I finally succeeded in getting the official programs, official mods, official patches, and the unofficial patches in working order. At that point, I copied the entire "Oblivion" folder and made a backup Oblivion folder (which would prove to be a very wise move).
{side note: it's quite difficult to find a definitive install order guide online, especially if using 1) GOTY Oblivion and 2) D2D Knights Collection. When does Disc 2 get installed? Which official patches to be used, if any? Etc etc..}
Going into the wee hours of the morning, I installed all unofficial mods. Started with the ones that have easy install processes. Finally got to Qarl's Textures, and ended on a weather mod that required the use of Wrye Bash. I've never done or seen anything like it, but figured it out in about an hour. By 6AM, I was done, and exhausted.
At this point, anything that I encounter in the actual game will be downright easy compared to this process. And it runs beautifully. :foodndrink:
