Windows Vista Performance Guide

Does anyone know how to configure Vista to allow accessing the in-game console via the (~) key? I'm actually having trouble with it in Fallout 3, but since its built on the same engine, I thought someone here would be able to help me.

Probably there is an entry on the ini file saying enableconsole=0

Yeah, I looked at that and it was already set to 1.

I wonder that Fallout 3 didn't reawaken Dami's participation? Maybe only the elves and dwarves variations of fantasy attract his interest!

This is not like other forums...it's rare that a thread gets stickied.

In the many months that I've been using Vista, I actually haven't tried the tweaks in this. Will try.

I just started playing Oblivion again with my new Core i7 upgrade and Vista 64 bit. It runs like a dream. I can gallop my horse through the great forest chased by four wolves all day with absolutely no problems. I'm playing vanilla Oblivion GOTY with no patches and no tweaks. This is how Oblivion was meant to be played!

Core i7 920
6 GB DDR3

OS on WD Raptor
Games on primary partition of WD Caviar Black 1 TB

What I wouldn't give for Oblivion not to be such a shoddy console port and have it not crash every hour in Vista. Nothing is more of a gaming buzzkill...

When I've tried Vista, superfetch has done nothing but degrade the performance of my systems. It has now become the first thing I disable (Along with readyboost and the search indexing).
If I start my PC or laptop and want to just check my E-mail, it takes around 2mins before I can get into outlook express while I wait for superfetch to do it's thing (even though it's SUPPOSEDLY a low priority process). If I disable it, this drops to around 45secs (Around the same as XP).
Superfetch only seems to work if you have your PC switched on 24/7. How is this good for anybody except for your electricity supplier?

My brother has a mean gaming laptop, he paid to cash for it (upper 3000) and after a while the system became sluggish. He played Crysis on it with max details and now it could barely run with medium, same with Oblivion. He said it's neither the defrag (auto defrag turned off but he defrags it religiously) , neither overheating but something else was doing something.

Turns out that after turning off these 3 - Windows search / superfetch/ readyboost/ - his system suddenly felt like brand new again. He also turned off indexing on the disk. (I recommended these for him)

If your hard drive led continuosuly flashing, and hear the hard drive chowing on something, it's most likely windows search or prefetching or the auto-defrag or a combination of those if you got no virus scanner running or some other application (like backup software or download manager) . . Regardless of what Microsoft says and many various sites, these things can slow down your pc. Don't forget, 90% of the PC users use the PC for internet browsing and screwing around with MS Office and the system must be idiotproof and lazyproof (lazy to search files or too idiotic to figure out where things are) .

Also don't forget to empty your temporary internet folder, especially if you use the dreaded Internet Explorer which I hate more than Vista.

Those aren't the only folders that get full of crap, that windows then neglects to clean up. Using some third party tool, like CCleaner, is a very good plan.

I just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for the wealth of information. During my time off this week, I had some quality time in the office.. an Oblivion installation vacation, I guess.

Monday night, for about 10 minutes: Bumped my RAM from 3GB to 8GB.
Tuesday afternoon: Finally decided which 50 or so mods I want. (subject to change, of course)
Tuesday night: Backed-up my personal files from Vista-32 & downloaded key software for the next day.
Wednesday afternoon & evening: Installed Vista-64. Installed my programs, tweaked the system.
Thursday morning: Framed map of Cyrodiil and hung it on my office wall. Slept.

My mini-Oblivion project vacation finally ended with one doozy of a Thursday night/Friday morning. The installation process began around 4PM, just as the forums here went down. Many mistakes were made, many uninstalls and re-installs performed. Lots of order-of-installation issues, missing files, system freeze-ups.. you name it, and it went wrong! Around 10PM, I finally succeeded in getting the official programs, official mods, official patches, and the unofficial patches in working order. At that point, I copied the entire "Oblivion" folder and made a backup Oblivion folder (which would prove to be a very wise move).

{side note: it's quite difficult to find a definitive install order guide online, especially if using 1) GOTY Oblivion and 2) D2D Knights Collection. When does Disc 2 get installed? Which official patches to be used, if any? Etc etc..}

Going into the wee hours of the morning, I installed all unofficial mods. Started with the ones that have easy install processes. Finally got to Qarl's Textures, and ended on a weather mod that required the use of Wrye Bash. I've never done or seen anything like it, but figured it out in about an hour. By 6AM, I was done, and exhausted.

At this point, anything that I encounter in the actual game will be downright easy compared to this process. And it runs beautifully. :foodndrink:
