Will I see any improvement if I install oblivion on Win7 with a video card that support directx 10?

Not really. The game doesn't even support DX10 so that doesn't matter. Don't be surprised if this game ends up being slightly slower than it would be on XP...this game doesn't officially support Win7, but is known to work.

The game works just fine on Windows 7. I use it. Many people use it. It isn't "officially" supported because the game came out long before Windows 7 existed.

But you don't get any improvement visually because it doesn't even know what directx 10 are right?

The game will not see a performance or visual increase when playing on a DX10/11 card. A more powerful GPU will make the game run smoother at higher settings. But with modern GPUs, a midrange one will max the game fine. A faster HDD or an SSD will make the game perform better though.

It runs fine on win 7 but would advise to install out of program files to avoid possible UAC problems.

I just tested oblivion on win 7: the game seems to run smoother and I was playing with QTP3 FULL and Detailed Terrain without OSR,Streamline ;)

Windows 7 (or Vista, but there''s other reasons to avoid that) is recommended because, provided the system is 64bit, you can use the LAA patch, which is an important part of getting stability on heavily modded games. XP doesn't allow you to do such a thing an thus limits how far you can go with modding.

XP comes in 64 bit flavor as well. But, trying to find printer drivers for XP 64 is interesting at best......

Finding any _good_ drivers for Windows 5.2 is "interesting" :P.

And the LAA patch won't work on XP anyway even if you are 64 bit.

So the bottom line is, if you want to run more than a few mods, Windows 7 is recommended.
