PC (Win7) Severe lag/stuttering

Post » Mon Sep 27, 2010 8:18 pm

Hi,

I have had my GOTY Edition for Oblivion for awhile now and played without ANY problems on a very similar PC about a year ago. 6-8 months ago I bought a new PC and got rid of the old one. I cannot Oblivion on this PC. I don't crash but the lag is horrible. Just getting past character creation took literally an hour due to being unable to move my mouse. And when it would actually move, then click something, it would take about 60-90 seconds before the action actually fired. All this with settings to the lowest.

This PC's specs are as follows:

Win 7 64-bit
Athlon quad core processor 630 (2.8ghz)
6GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9100 3GB

I'm aware that the 9100 is not a top of the line card, and Oblivion isn't officially supported on windows 7, but after doing some research for the past couple of hours I've heard of people playing with very similar (some identical) systems with no issue. I have done the basics already of a) updating gfx card B) defragging system c) killing not-needed processes and a few other misc things such as virus scans and what-not. I have never had a virus or any problems with this computer.

On a side note; I've noticed that I am also unable to play LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) now as well. I played this game awhile on this PC for a few months on very high settings with no problems. I tried logging in there since it's free now and was unable to move.

Here is a dxdiag report below. And thanks ahead for any help/information.

The 9100 is bottom of the line, integrated graphics, with the bare minimum requirement for V-ram for oblivion. The 'shared' feature does not improve performance..... paging back and forth to system ram is slow as compared to on-card ram. (but, you don't even have the card... it's integrated onto the MB.)

What settings are you trying to play at? Turning down the prettys might help some, but, don't expect 'good' performance from that video solution.

Also, I have noticed that folks definition of "runs good" various dramatically...... One person's "good", might be the next guys "unplayable".

Oblivion is SUPPOSED to stutter, sputter, hiccough, and crash with a 9100 chip (no graphics card there).

The minimum is a CARD, not a chip.

Ya, my definition of unplayable was meant literally. Meaning I can't get actually even get to the prison from character creation. Hitting escape to try and exit the game is even fruitless sometimes because I can't even click the Exit button :( Also I was trying with the lowest possible settings.

Makes sense. I just thought maybe something could possible be wrong with my system that could be fixed which is why I mentioned the LOTRO reference - a game I played on this system on high/very high settings with no problem which is also now unplayable at the lowest settings.

Thanks both.

It IS something you can fix..... by upgrading the video card. That machine appears to come with a 300 watt power supply, so you have many options available to you there.

Given that some things used to run, and now do not though...... what changed between 'ran', and 'unplayable'? Get any windows updates? etc.??

Ya, upgrading is something I'm definitely considering, and have been for awhile even before wanting to play Oblivion again.

As for the latter, nothing changed. Just time, roughly ~3 months. Been working a lot more and hadn't really used my computer for much other than email, general browsing, etc.

I installed something called Gamebooster, an app I found a few times reading these forums and tried Oblivion. To my surprise the game started off playing very well.. for about 60 seconds. Then it went back to what it was previously doing. This morning I also re-installed Stronghold 2, a very old game that I played briefly on this PC after finding the game on sale. I played it for maybe a day and just messed around with the map editor then quickly got bored and just removed it. Today, after re-installing, the lag was awful. I re-installed simply to test and even though I know my computer isn't ideal for Oblivion, this almost confirms my notion that there is a problem with my PC that I'm unable to find, leaving me baffled.

It's not that big of a deal, personally, as I only wanted to play Oblivion again after reading so much about Skyrim. I have a 360 that my brother is currently borrowing so if I really feel like playing I'll just grab it for the 360. Outside of gaming this computer runs great. Just curious as to what could of possibly happened to stop it from playing ANY game.

Thanks for the help.

Do some machine maintenance. Spyware scans, adware scans, virus scans. Use some utility like CCleaner to get rid of crap windows leaves behind. Defrag your harddrive, and run CCleaners Registry utility.

See if any of that makes a difference.

I've done all of the above excluding using CCleaner. I'll try it and let you know. Thanks.

I ran all the CCleaner utilities and nothing changed. I'm just gonna accept it that this PC won't play the game and just find it somewhere for the 360.

Thanks again.
