Racism and Fallout.

Thats genocide, not racism.

They consider themselves pure humans, the master race, and that all mutants must be exterminated off the planet.
How is that not racism?

People don't turn into Ghouls because they have the same culture, language, social practice or heritable characteristics, they become Ghouls as a result of a degenerative disease caused by exposure to radiation. What happens to them is indeed discrimination, but not racial-discrimination, and thus it cannot be called racism. Ghouls may have formed a culture of their own over the years, and may have developed their own customs due to their similar condition, but those customs weren't inherently there to begin with.

as any modder will tell you, Ghouls are indeed a unique race.

Yeah, I think Bethesda has done a fine job spreading the load of good and bad people over the entire spectrum of npc's: you have both nasty jerks, neutrals, and helpful strangers in human (all ethnicities), ghoul, robot, supermutant, and animal form. Only the insects are all bad, except for some ants that you have to look pretty hard to find. If anything, Beth might be guilty of making most of the REALLY bad npc's human: most of the raiders, slavers, the Enclave (with a notable exception), Ashur and Wernher, Tenpenny, the Vaulttec Corp back in the day, etc.

For the OP, you may have encountered a lot more human ethnic types than you think-- but all the whites, asians, and latinos look so similar when they're shooting at you that it's hard to tell, especially with the (somewhat silly, IMO) 80's punk hairstyles and the layers of grime everyone has because washing is just a memory. You shoot, duck, hit and slash them, then loot their broken bodies... who has time to look at them closely?

I am very disappoint in Bethesda. I have not seen many blacks, (Simms, and his kid and a kid in little lamp light (same model), and I think I have seen one BoS black man) or mexicans. I suppose you might be able to try to pass Carlos in front of rivet city off at Mexican, even though he is really white.

Wow. Just.. wow.

You do know that Mexican isn't a race, right? It's a nationality.

Troll alert. Not only is this stupid, it isn't even true. It's kind of funny that he seems to think all hispanics are Mexicans, though.

Complete and total extermination of every single person who's different fron you is called genocide. It's an extreme version of racism.

Racism in the "I don't like xyz. I think they're stupid/weak/violent/etc..." does no equal genocide. You can hate a group of people without being genocidal. :)

While you guys are listing black characters, don't forget about Red in Big Town, Biwwy in Little Lamplight and Kodiak in the BoS.

With a little fiddling around with the avatar generator, I made a character who was Native American (his last name was Ironhorse after the actor because I liked the name). Of course on the various contracts on his head he was listed as Hispanic, but what do those guys know, anyway? I didn't pick a specific nation for him to be descended from but I did take the trouble to get Red's bandanna since it's the only one in the Wasteland and I wanted it so I could get that movie Apache look.

Racism is hating someone because of his/her race. The Enclave does not do that. They have men and women of all races in their ranks and they target everyone they consider not human. Thus the Enclave targets creatures of other humanoid species. It doesn't matter what s/he looks like: if their DNA is different enough from their definition of homo sapiens, they are a threat to the human race and they must be destroyed.

But on racism itself in Fallout, Chris Avellone confirmed it in Fallout Bible that there is racism in Fallout as it was in the pre-war world. It is just not portrayed in the games since it would make them banned all over the world.

On Bethesda being racist with not having "enough" blacks and "Mexicans", I disagree. Both are minorities and especially in Fallout world there would be a massive white majority in the United States. If you wanted to have blacks statistically correctly in this game, only one in ten NPCs would be black. But it is not the case since most factions have a 25% percentage of each race making all the races equally present in the game.

Well, downtown DC actually has a high concentration of African Americans, so there would be more of them among the survivors. Similarly, California would likely have a higher proportion of Latinos.

Racism? Fallout 3 is probably one of the least racist games I have ever seen. You have plenty of black characters such as Jonas, Paul, Lucas Simms, Eulogy Jones, Grouse, Victoria Watts, Bannon, that Megaton lady, etc. Not only that, but they're treated rather equally to the white NPCs and aren't potrayed as lower or higher.

The only thing I'd consider slightly racist is referring to them all as "African Americans", because like my Jamaican teacher says not every black person is American and some who are from countries like Jamaica or even Europe don't like to be labeled as African American just because they're black.

Like my Grandmother and Aunt for instance.

Who cares? Seriously... whites are the majority in the game. It's not like we start a game and get told "be a white male with blue eyes and blonde hair or a sub-human of another race".

It's not racism, it's just people trying to complain about bull-sh*t.

It's not likely very many Downtown residents survived the exchange, much less the chaos and radiation afterward. Aside from Underworld, there doesn't appear to have been a permanent settlement in DC at all until Rivet City was cleared around 2030.

Except you know... who's to say any blacks are alive then? It's a different reality. For all you know, all the blacks left America.
