Fallout Collection (White Label version)

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 11:12 pm

I'm new to the FO universe. I'm installing the White Label FO collection, which has me install each game separately. It installed FO1 just dandy, and (according the readme) is at version 1.2. Are there more recent official or unofficial patches that I will need?

Secondly, I attempted to install FO2. Unlike FO1, it didn't use the Windows installer wizard, and I was immediately presented with several installation options ranging from Small to HUMONGOUS. Which installation is needed/preferred? Where can I find the most recent official/unofficial patches?

Lastly, what's the modding scene like? Are there any must-have mods?

My OS is Windows XP 64-bit, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your patience, I'm sure you get a zillion of these threads all the time. I tried using the search function, but I am unsure what patches the White Label version specifically needs, as opposed to some other publisher's FO collection DvD.

For Fallout 2, you might want to look into the http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40443. It adds a lot of new content that was suppose to be in the game originally along with some entirely new stuff. As for the patches and such, and with the other games, I can't help you there. Good luck getting it patched up and running :)

Restoration patch also comes with the unofficial patch so no need to worry about that.

Highly recommend installing the Mash'shttp://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42386

Thanks. :) I also used google and came across this article http://donttellmetheending.com/2008/05/26/guide-to-installing-fallout-1-and-2/. Does the info seem to be correct and up-to-date?

Also, could you advise me as to what installation size I should select when installing FO2?

Yeah, High Resolution makes everything look alot better. No more big ass sprites, for one. Better camera view too. You may have to resort to some pixel hunting every now and again, but nothing major. The edges of some of the random encounter maps look a little funny too-- unfinished, since they weren't meant to be zoomed out that far (and, as a result, immersion breaking) but the pros far outweigh the cons.

Also, install the child patch, as White Label is a European company-- thus the games (for legal purposes, presumably) have no children. Do both of these for both FO1 and FO2. In FO2 children are essential to complete certain quests too.

As for patches, download the latest official patches, then the unofficial patches from No Mutants Allowed (nma-fallout.com)

Choose Humongous for the installation.

On Mods: I dunno. I'm new to the community myself, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorite series.

Ah, I didn't know about the child-removal! Thank you for telling me. :)

I'm on NMA, but I can't find a downloads section for patches (official and unofficial). I've been to the Official FO site to download the latest official patch, but I'm redirected to a site that wants me to wait 7 minutes before being able to download. No thanks.

I'll definitely give the high-res mod a go, it sounds like it'll be fantastic.

If you haven't played the game before you shouldn't install any mods. Once you played them, install the mods and see what a difference it makes in the game.

I agree, but I would contend that the unofficial patches are oftentimes almost as necessary (if not more so) than the official patches. I also have a backlog of, like, five games (15 if you count my PS2 game backlog), so it isn't terribly likely I'll be playing through FO1 and FO2 more than once any time soon. Therefore, I want to make sure I have all the bugfixes and a few graphics/visual updates for my first go-around.

On your first playthrough, I wouldn't install the Restoration Project, but killap's unofficial patch is pretty much a must. It only fixes bugs that the official patches don't fix and doesn't include nor change any content beside that (unlike some other fan-made patches to various games).

What are your thoughts on the mod/patching suggestions offered in http://donttellmetheending.com/2008/05/26/guide-to-installing-fallout-1-and-2/? Also, I still need help locating the patches download page for FO1 and FO2 on the No Mutants Allowed website.

@PeterPotamus: You make a good point about experiencing the content as it was released before going on to modding it. I'll heed this advice, as it is not dissimilar to my own thoughts regarding a first-time play through for other games like TESIII and TESIV.

You can get the unofficial patches and high res mods for both FO1 and 2 http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php.

Official Patches: 1.2 is the latest patch for both games. You can get those from Gamershell or Filefront.
Unofficial Patches: Download the 1.3.4 patch for FO1 and Killap's patch for FO2 from the NMA forums mentioned above.

Oh, excellent, thank you! I think my FO1 already has the 1.2 patch: there's a readme in there that lists the version as 1.2. Are there any other ways I might be able to tell if the game has already been patched?

EDIT: AAARG. Atomic Gamer is such a svcky file host. I need alternate download sites, 'cause I'm not waiting 5 minutes to download one file. >:(

EDIT2: Found everything I needed on other sites.

http://www.patches-scrolls.de/fallout2.php site for FO2 patches
and http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page for finding the names and download sites of patches. Most link to NMA. Fortunately, the High Res patches for FO1 and FO2 on NMA are not hosted on Atomic Gamer.

For FO1, install the Child Patch, then the 1.2, then 1.2.1, then 1.3. I then installed the high-res patch (remember to run the high-res .exe created in the Fallout folder). Game didn't explode, so I assume I did things in the right order.

Not sure if you've seen this guide here? I found it pretty helpful: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout.html
