Mod suggestions for a picky mod-user

Hmmm. i think you should look at Gary Noonan's Head replacer as it appear to resemble more closely with the vanilla heads.

By 'visual mods' do you mean mods which change scenery and such?

Maybe you should try the Visual Pack. However if MGE lags badly than I think this one will too. I mean mods which changes landscapes normally require a PC which is more powerful than one which is needed for Vanilla Morrowind.

Just tried it. A step in the right direction, but it still replaces vanilla NPC heads with the ugly less desirable ones. I do like the dark elf skin recolor.

The female nudity is a little silly looking from the waste down, but the top isn't bad. I don't think I'll be keeping it though.

I assume the most important is graphics card

ATI Radeon x300/550/1050 Series

I use a bunch of texture replacers, including Vibrant Morrowind, Vibrant Skies, and many of Darknut's stuff. I also have weather and sun glare from Vurt's skies. Those don't lag me at all.

BB is the highest quality body mod available, so are you really surprised that most people use it and most clothing/armor mods are dependent on it? I don't understand your comment about clipping-- I've only seen one instance where the arms clipped through the pauldrons a bit in the back, and that was the worst of it.

It sounds like what you want in terms of graphics is just the vanilla game. If you're happy with how it looks, don't download graphics mods just because that's what everyone else is doing ;)

OP, I'd suggest looking at older mods to get what you're looking for -- there were a lot of people modding stuff for MW long before BB came out! :D I don't know any graphical replacements you'd like for bodies and heads (you don't like the ones I use :) ) but there are a lot of good armor mods that use the vanilla meshes and thus work well with vanilla bodies. There are also a lot of older race mods that used the vanilla bodies as well. As for companions, while I don't know any modern ones that use vanilla heads, it doesn't take much work in the CS to change a companion's head to one you like better. I did that once with Julan when I was playing with a vanilla-heads-and-bodies game earlier this year, and I'm no great shakes with the CS. Poke around at some of the tutorials, poke around in the CS -- once you figure out how to make small changes like this, you'll be able to customize things that will suit your tastes. And if you ever feel really ambitious, head to http://lovkullen.net/Emma/grumpy.htm and look at Grumpy's Companion Project; it's a great place to start when one has the urge to try their hand at companion-making.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm. Anything with at least 128mb of memory should be able to handle any texture replacer that I am ware of, like you say. It just won't be able to utilize MGE to any substantial degree and the view distance shouldn't often be set to high. Maybe your CPU is having difficulty handling the game, or perhaps your system ram is below 1GB?

Definitely. One of the cool things about Morrowind is that many alterations require very little in-depth knowledge. You could easily alter some modern mods to fit your tastes better.

When the game has subtle lag with "Morrowind defaults" selected in MGE, but none at all without MGE, it's likely that my system just doesn't like whatever it's adding.

that's interesting, and your probably right. I have a similar problem with my machine, though the Frame per second optimizer took care of the laginess. MGE did cause my gave to crash too regularly though, so I removed it. I suspect it was because my video card was only a ps. i and was bottlenecked by the transfer rate.I suspect that MGE will use a lot of recourses on your computer even on morrowind defaults because it also functions as a script extender. This means that it will still be running in the background regardless as to weather you are actually using it or not. It can be a very stable program but only on suitable systems.

If that's true, it might be worth turning off the internal version of MWSE.

What he said. Sometime the default mods just don't work 100% like you like them to, but sadly there may be nothing better... well then you can fix it up a bit :D
If you just don't like the skin tone, its not overly difficult to change it. It may take some time to get right though, because you seem to be very detailed oriented ;)

read a few of the guides here on the forum or google them, you'd be amazed at all you can do by just reading a few guides and messing with CS a little. You don't have to do anything major, but a little change here or there is nice.
