Getting the CS to work with the steam version

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:23 am

Today I suddenly felt like dusting off the good old morrowind cd's and enjoy one of my favorite games ever. However, to my horror, I found that my morrowind CD had somehow been scratched in a way that renders the data2.cab file unreadable. Annoyed that I was unable to install morrowind, I went to my trusty steam account and bought it off there instead.

The steam version, however, doesn't come with the construction set, but seeing as I still have my original CS cd as well as the CS install folder on the morrowind cd I thought I'd be able to install it just fine with the steam version.
The install itself actually did go fine, but when I try loading all 3 expansions, or morrowind and 1 expansion, I get a lot of "Chunk size 10 is too big in chunk WEAT_ID in form REGN_ID. Max size is 8, datatrruncated to" errors. This doesnt seem to be a problem when I just load morrowind and tribunal, but if I try to load morrowind and bloodmoon, or all 3, I get a lot more errors (for example that a lot of weather chances doesnt add up to 100%", and after it finishes loading all packages the CS crashes.

Does anyone know a possible fix to my problem? I tried fixing the problem by changing the dates of the esm and bsa files to the dates they have on the cd, but it didnt seem to do any good.

Edit:
Fix found it seems. From my post on the steam forums:

Seems I have found a way that lets you load all 3 .esm files without crashing the CS.

1. Get universal extractor if you dont already have it.
2. Extract data1.cab from the bloodmoon CD.
3. Copy the "TES Construction Set.exe" file into your morrowind folder.

You should then be able to load all 3 .esm files. For some reason only morrowind and bloodmoon files show up after loading though, but I can see mournhold cells, so I assume tribunal is loaded properly.

This fix sadly only works if you have the original bloodmood CD though, sadly.

I get a lot of "Chunk size 10 is too big in chunk WEAT_ID in form REGN_ID. Max size is 8, datatrruncated to" errors.

This can be caused if the expansions were installed in the wrong order. It needs to go Morrowind -> Tribunal -> Bloodmoon.
Usually, just reinstalling Bloodmoon will fix it.
(Search around the forums for "chunk size" and you'll see others have had this problem).

Yea, I read something like that another place. My problem is, however, that I'm unable to reinstall either tribunal or bloodmoon seperately as I have the steam version. If I try to install either on top of the steam version, I get a "morrowind not installed" error.

Try installing the Bloodmoon patch, if you can.
That, or open up the Bloodmoon disc, and fish through the files (may take Universal Extractor) until you find the Morrowind.exe there.
It'd be easier to send it, but that's against the rules, so you'll just have to find the copy in the installer.

I think I may have found a solution to the problem. It seems TES Construction Set.exe was the culprit. I swapped the old file with the file on the bloodmoon cd (Thanks for the extractor btw. Tried to get the .cab files open earlier, but without luck.), and now I can load all 3 .esm files without crashing. Tribunal.esm doesnt show up in the data files list after I've loaded it however, but it seems to be working still, as I can view cells from mournhold.
