Surface water collor turned weird!?

Post » Thu Oct 07, 2010 8:29 pm

Ok this is really weird. When i started MW yesterday the water was looking as it should, both on the surface and underwater. But today the surface looks totally black, while underwater still looks as it should in my game?

I am not using any MWSE mod nor do i have a Mod that needs MGE(That i know of), so i guess that could not be the case. Wrye Mash does not show a problem, i have used MLOX to check my load order, and i used Tes3lint to check for junk cells/fog problems. Do not get me wrong i can continue playing, but it looks extremely weird, and i do not like it.

This is my load order:

Is there any chance you could post the [Water] and [Pixelwater] sections of your morrowind.ini file? Perhaps there is an anomaly there........

To be honest though, I've never experienced that before to be sure, but I highly doubt its caused by a mod, though I guess it could be a gfx card issue with displaying pixel shaded water, but that would mean you have one ancient piece of hardware I'd think...

I have the latest drivers for my NVidia Geforce 100, namely 258.96 WHQL. It does however not mean that it could not cause problems i agree, but then the question remains...why was the water looking good the first day and from the second day this glitch pops up.

Nothing really stands out(though I would definately change UnderwaterColor to something like 010,010,030, and UnderwaterColorWeight to 0.5 for a more realistic underwater environment like getting darker when its dark outside) that could cause the issue, perhaps it is your drivers........

Try this though, Open up your morrowind launcher, Click options, and turn off pixel shaded water, load your game, and make sure the water looks right(it won't look good, but hopefully it will at least show up as a blueish paste rather than an oil slick). Now exit your game, and open the launcher again and turn pixel shaded water back on, hopefull it will look right this time and its just an odd issue with registry values or some other windows oddity rather than a hardware issue, if it doesn't look right than I would suggest trying to roll back drivers and see if that fixes it, and if it doesn't I'm out of ideas. :X

Thank you very much for that tip, it looks indeed much more realistic underwater with those settings. :foodndrink:

Well turning pixel shaded water of indeed makes it looks like a blueisch paste, but turning it back on does not solve it. And doing a rollback is something i could do but it is something i do not like doing. So it appears that i will keep the setting with pixel shaded water off, it looks a lot better then it did in the first post. :D

So it appears that what both Fenix and you mentioned is true, it is some how connected to my graphics cards drivers....oh well at least the water is now better to look at then before, thanks for all the help everyone.

This topic should be made in Tech Support section, rather than here. :)
Sometimes games and graphics cards/drivers suddenly start glitching without any obvious reason. Reinstall is what I would do, tho I doubt it would help you. :/
Edit: typos.

If you're going to turn off pixel shader water, you might want to check out Jarrod's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=181 or http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2395 water texture replacers.

:D No problem, in my opinion, I think the default for underwater ini settings should be like that rather than the rediculously bright settings that the game is installed with, but then again, you know what they say about opinions! :P

Well darn, I was hoping it was a mere windows bug and not an actual game or hardware fault, though the game is riddled with bugs so its not too surprising. :P

Well, it might just be a game bug that krept up that I just never personally experienced, though I've been using MGE so long, that I don't hardly remember what the original water looked like anyway! That being said however, you are welcome, I just wish I could have gotten the pixel shaded water back for you, because honestly, that pixel shaded water still looks pretty darn good even by today's graphical standards IMO..........there I go with my opinions again, bah!

LoL personal opinions are important, and yeah the pixel shaded water looks great indeed, considering how old MW is. :D
