Fallout 4: Speculation & Suggestions
Thread #8
This topic is for ideas and suggestions for Fallout 4 so that we can keep all the discussion in one thread. Other very general idea/suggestion topics for a future Fallout game will either be closed, or moved to this one.

This thread should be used to discuss items you'd like to see in a future game, gameplay tweaks, quest ideas, things you hope are not in the next game and so on. If you want to discuss major issues, use a separate topic - such as the discussion about adding multi-player or co-op play, which already has a thread. Please search first to see if there is an active/recent thread on a particular topic.

Re: Weapon and item degredation - I'm a fan of the mechanic, at least in concept; but I'd agree that there's still plenty of room for refinement in that area. You probably should be able to repair items without having to find an exact match, for one. Or at least have a number of other salvage items (like scrap metal, etc) that could be used up for the same purposes to repair anything at all. And certain unique items probably shouldn't suffer degredation, or at the very least to a lesser extent (or through some sort of algorithm tied to your Repair skill.)

More than anything, what I thought it brought to the table was more emphasis on the Repair skill in the first place. That was one of those highly underutilized skills in the previous games, I always thought. I'd made a number of characters with Repair skill tagged in Fallout 1 and 2, and you don't really find as many things you can do with that skill as you would with some of the other secondary skills. Having item degredation opened up a whole new world for that skill - in Fallout 3, that's going to be one of the more important skills you can raise up.

We talk about the "realism" associated with the concept until the cows come home, but none of that really has much bearing on a game filled with Supermutants, "Radiation!" and Ghouls. The Fallout universe is just as much a fantasy world as Middle Earth ever was. It's just set in a different timeline - using "Science!" in place of "Magic" doesn't make the thing any more reality-based.
