New to modding

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 10:43 pm

Hello. I was working on something I had saved previously and when I added something to the file and tried to save it, it said the file was either a master file or in use and I had to save it under a new file. Is there any way to delete the plugin files and start over or do I have to save it under a new file each time?

When you load a plugin, you have to set it as active. Otherwise, any changes you make to it will be saved in a new plugin.

when you load your plug-in click the "Set as Active File" button. Then when you'll be expanding on your previous work. Otherwise each of your plug-ins only contain the changes made on that modding session.

Look for tutorials. At the General TES Construction Set -- Morrowind section main page there is a list of tutorials.

One of the best tutorials for newbs: http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/?p=modding_data/tuts/dsong/first_room
It explains everything for beginners.
And here's http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/?p=modding_data/tuts/dsong/second_room when you need it.

Calishans tutorial "how to build a house" helped me learn the basic controls. Highly recommended. So how do you delete plug ins that don't show up in the data files folder under Morrowind program files. It will not let me delete them from the construction sets data files list or the game start up screen data files list.

Sounds like you're running on Vista, which keeps plugin files in a hidden directory. If that's indeed the case, browse to your Morrowind directory, and up near the top of the explorer window will be a button that says "Show Compatibility Files" (or somesuch). Click that and it'll take you to the folder where your plugins are actually installed. You can manually move the files to your Morrowind/Data Files folder without causing issues, but by default, Vista will always place new .ESPs in the "Compatibility" folder.

TBH, you don't need toturials, just mess about with the CS, and bug everyone on the forums, that's what I did ^_^

Learning by Tutorials gives you the quickest and most straightforward way to learn the CS. There's no messing around with randomness, they allow you to get the job done by following written instructions.
There's usually two ways to do anything in the CS. The right way and the way you think is right. Making stuff happen by accident while you mess around in the CS doesn't necessarily mean you did anything correctly.
Read as many tutorials as you can, OP. They are invaluable. :read:
People who have been modding for years still reference them from time to time, because there's more to remember with the CS/scripting/dialog than most people can keep track of.

You can also use the Enchanted Editor to access them, that's what I do. They'll be saved with a .001, .002, etc after the names. From what I've seen, it would seem that the higher the number, the longer ago it took place.

And yes, get the tutorials. Also, search for Morrowind Scripting for Dummies, I don't have a link but it's pretty much the definitive text on the subject. When I have a problem, that text and the function helpfile of MWEdit usually answers my questions.

I'm thinking about trying to learn modding, I have tried to before but concluded pretty quick that tutorials that tell you exactly what to do isn't my way of learning, sadly :(
So what I would need is a short movie or something that just gives a good picture about what everything does, not very detailed just an overview. Is there something like that awaible? :S
I am going to try the tutorials to and I have alot of faith in the http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/?p=modding_data/tuts/dsong/first_room , it looks really good :) Going to try it when I get home from work.
