Foiling Dark Brotherhood Attacks

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:50 am

I always play with the difficulty maxed, which makes the early Dark Brotherhood attacks deadly. But a few years ago, I discovered a glitch that enabled me to survive until I was tough enough to fight the assassins off.

As soon as you start your game, before you rest the first time, go to Balmora and join the Fighter's Guild. From that point on, you can sleep in the bunk room downstairs, safe from Dark Brotherhood attacks. Why?

I face the bed as you see when selecting it for rest. If an assassin appears, he will appear stuck inside the bed, entirely helpless. I don't know if this works anywhere else, but it certainly works in this one spot, and it has enabled me to survive the beginning of the game.

And their gear makes for a terrific source of income....

Getting them trapped in the Fighters Guild beds is a known trick and works well, you need to attack them quickly and you can stop them from throwing their dart as well.

You can also find a high rock on a river bank, sleep with your back to the river so they spawn in the water - especially useful if you are a marksman as you can pick them off fairly easily.

Im level 11 on the xbox version and have only been attacked once by the DB.It was as soon as I hit level 6.

I have rested and waited in several locations, trying to be attacked again.Any ideas what the deal is?

Did you go to Ebonheart and speak with Apelles Matius? After doing that, the attacks stop.

You might just be lucky (or unlucky depending on how you want to look at it). As I recall the attacks are random each time you rest/wait. There's no guarantee that you'll ever be attacked again, but obviously the more you rest/wait the better your chances.

If resting/sleeping just gives a chance of an attack then I can understand.I thought it was a common thing, kind of scripted to happen in certain cycles. My friend on pc has been attacked a bunch, and hes only about 20 hours into the game.I know on pc the attacks occur at an earlier level though.

Yeh, I was attacked at level two my first time, scared the crud out of me. Now they are just annoyances, but I haven't fought any in awhile either, and I haven't spoken with that guy in Ebonheart, so idk.

I sleep in the dormitory at the Mages Guild in Balmora.
One of two things will happen.
Estirdalin will block me from getting out which is a major hassle. (She might get hurt.)
At that point I cast Almisivi Intervention and run back from the Temple to the Guild Hall and fight in the open, in the hall or downstairs. No Mages Guild NPC gets hurt that way.
OR:
Creep up to the hallway and catch them there.
Both are a little tough for a low level char, but not that tough.
Trick is a lot of quicksaves.

really scrolls are super here, they are not really fast if you are fighting in a shrine but you know what to expect and they change the odds

You'll say that, but one of my first deaths while fighting DB assasins was in that very room...

I had something similar happen to me in my current game.
I rested in a daedric ruin and didn't even notice the "You hear a noise" message until I tried to progress and noticed an assassin's legs sticking out of the door. Luckily I could target him with an absorb health spell, otherwise it would have been impossible to continue.

I did this yesterday on my new account.

But I was upset I couldn't get to his armour (and if Telekinesis works, mine didn't have a large enough distance to reach it whilst being in view.)

So I went to the Balmora Mages guild, and he spawned oddly around the corner (on the stairs up to the ground floor.) Still, Dwemer Jinksword > DB Assassin.

I generally get attacked by them as soon as I rest once in the game, so at level 1, and depending on how great my start is I then end up either running away (or rather teleporting using a scroll which I keep on me just for this) or first of all using up all my magicka with ranged magic attacks then going in, hitting them with a long sword, running away, turning around and repeating till they are dead (then I take their armour make a boat load of cash selling it to the mudcrab and the rest is history)

They aren't very difficult if you quick save enough and avoid getting hit, also I don't believe they get darts till the higher levels. If you rest enough they will become stronger, faster, smarter, better equipped with poisoned and peralizing weapons and eventually come in pairs. They become a real pain, but I never talk to the guy until they stop showing for good because they are a good test to see where my character is. If I can beat them I am happy... if not I sleep a little less and train some more. Eventually though they will give up. You can continue the Tribunal main quest if you remember to, but you wont have any reminders popping up to disturb you in your peaceful slumbers.

My house is cluttered with their bodies. Constantly attack me in pairs when I sleep, especially annoying when I need to sleep for days. I feel they're sending their army after me.

I stall going to Mournhold for new characters because their armor is very good starting income.
