Lagging Woes :(

Hey guys,

Playing FO3, just upgraded my video card. Was running damn decently on my GeForce 7250 (little slow, but meh). That card fried, so I borrowed my friend's 8600. Ran PERFECTLY. I went out and bought a new GTS250, and now the game is getting a LOT of lag. Inside buildings it slows down, and also it will REALLY lag if there is an explosion of any kind. I've played with the settings, turned them all the way down, all the way up, nothing seems to help. Always the same thing.

Computer can definitely handle this game (as it's already proved with the 8600).

3 GB ram
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40 GHz
nVidia GeForce GTS 250
Windows Vista

All drivers are up to date, FO3 v 1.5 is installed as well. I've tried using a configurator to fine tune settings, and nothing seems to help.

Wondering if anyone's had the same problem, or knows how to fix it? I've uninstalled and reinstalled and same problem occurs. SERIOUSLY frustrating. Hopefully someone knows what to do! Thanks guys

Could be temperatures.

If you only had a 7250 -a business/workstation card rather than one thats made for gaming- in before, then the cooling may have only been good enough for keeping that card -or something a little higher like the 8600- cool.

It's entirely possible that that new GTS250 is generating far more heat than the fans can handle.

Have you renamed the INI file in the game save folder to force the game to create a new one?

I don't believe it's the heat. I have a very well ventilated case (especially right now, the side is off). And renamed which file, Gorath? Explain a bit further, please.

I tried starting a new game to see if the save was the issue, and that didn't seem to fix anything. All advice is welcome!

I have been experiencing the exact same problem (I don't have problems with explosions though, only the interiors). Did you or anyone else ever find a solution to this?

I didn't want to hijack your thread, so I made my own: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1134530-severe-lag-in-interior-cells-in-goty-on-vista-64-bit/

Thanks

I hear you man. I'm running:

Phenom II Quad 3.0
Nvidia GTX 260
8 GB of Dual Channel DDR2
Vista 64

I know. not top shelf but it's not bloody bad either.

And the game runs like crap. ??? Seriously???? WTF??? OK...it's not like crap but close enough. Shouldn't be having the kind of stuttering it has with that set up.

Listen. This weekend I upgraded my drivers through STEAM thinking it might help. It actually got worse. Might consider looking for an older version of the 200 series drivers.

Also Hows your power supply? The power needs of this card are much greater than the Nvidia 7 and 8 series. Could be your card isn't running optimally if it's underpowered....just a thought.

@OP, did you make sure to delete the .ini file when you installed the new card. Its located in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3.
seems to me that Nvidia drivers are the problem (or mabey nvidea cards in general)

heres my setup. runs perfect on High settings:

There really is no need to post your own dxdiag if you run it fine. Almost all PCs in the world are different, if not in hardware it is in software/codecs.
