I have been using limewire but it seems like it's been shut down. Anyone know of any other good programs? Basically the only thing i use em for is downloading tunes so as long as it does that well i'll be happy

The major issue with programs like Limewire is that you can't tell the licence of the file you are downloading. Obviously, you wouldn't want to do anything illegal but it makes it almost impossible not to. http://www.jamendo.com/en/ on the other hand, you can see the licence of the music and it is all free, which much reduces the chances of you committing a crime. You may also be interested in the record label Magnatune.

Places like http://www.last.fm/ allow you to listen to various bands, and also bands similar to that band, so you can find more music you like. last.fm at least has licence agreements with the record companies so that they are paid a small amount of money for each play.

Seriously, copyright infringement isn't cool and while you are taking money from the "evil" record labels ("evil" in quotes, as some embrace the fair trade principle), you are also taking money from the artist. Sometimes as much as 50% of the sale of the music goes to the artist and I am sure you can appreciate how this is actually quite a lot of money.

Yacoby has a point though, for legal alternatives.

Yes, it was shut down. Something about a court case and copyright violations.
