Stuttering/jumpy in menus and dialogue

Post » Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:08 pm

Hey all, just installed Fallout 3 GOTY edition on my PC, it recommended high settings and seems to be running perfectly fine ingame (still in vault 101 as a 10 year old)

However, when I enter a dialogue conversation, or a menu (Pip-boy, name entry at start of game, appearance choosing at start) the game seems jumpy, audio is fine but on screen image and mouse cursor momentarily freeze thoughout the menu or conversation.

I must again stress that the game runs fine, only bugging when entering a menu or conversation, is this a known problem? Is there a patch or fix?

Thanks for any help

I sometimes get some lag with my menus, but recently it was much worse after installing new video drivers. When I rolled back to my old ones, the menu became smooth again, more or less. So you might want to try that.

Thanks for the quick response, just got to the point where your dad gives you a BB gun and is about to take you outside, it keeps crashing to windows whenever he goes to exit. I think this is a more well known issue?

Should i just scale my settings back lower, or just try rolling driver back as suggested?

Edit: and now when I've gone to load the game with lower settings it crashed on the menu before even choosing a save file to load, hmm, something isn't right here

Edit 2: Hmm, updated to 1.4 and it seems to have solved the random load crashing and the jumpy menus seem to be gone too, will just have to keep playing round with the settings to a nice compromise i guess

thanks again for the help

How did you update to 1.4? I ran fine with that version and now I cant with 1.7. When I start up the title Games for Windows Live (a thousand boils on the person who invented this) updates me to the latest version. Can you use DLC without going to 1.7?

Hey sorry for the late reply, I've not had a chance to test any DLC yet, so maybe i will have to upgrade to 1.7 first, it did alert me that things were available from the DLC etc. and where to go to access it.

And to update to 1.4 i think i actually just googled 'fallout 3 update' and kept clicking links until i found a download that was still available, turns out the first one i could download easily (without signing up to anything) was a 1.4 update download.
