.
Because the story, if it included mistrust, would have been more complex to write, and detracted from "riding around on a horse and killing things"?

Though, I'm sure most here agree that is Beth simply had a little more courage pertaining to the reading ability of the players, that sort of plot would have been much easier to implement.

Because we can all read.

Welkynd stones contain the concentrated power of Mundus; their counterparts are Sigil stones, which are used to hold open Oblivion Gates. A Great Sigil Stone, then, is what we require. - Martin

Doesn't he mean the concentrated power Aetherius?

Perhaps Trevelyan was referring to the fact that Mundus, the anchor of Existence, harvests Magicka (light) FROM Aetherius. Welkynd stones, stones of/from Creation (Mundus/Aetherius) are the counterparts of Sigil stones, stones of/from Destruction (Oblivion).

http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/magic_sky.shtml states that light is one of the 4 elements that comprise the Mundus, possibly the most important.

Probably. However, (as unlikely as it seems) it could indeed be the magically congealed limitation force of the mundus itself.... This would imply that the Ayleids were lorkhanites though, which I find to be a dubious assertion. (Such a construction would however, still be quite powerful and useful magically, and could be used to temper the raw forces of the Aether, into limited, and thus, more useful (to mortals) forms.
