Getting Oblivion Tomorrow

Post » Tue Oct 12, 2010 7:58 pm

Hey guys, I just got an xbox recently and decided I had to have Oblivion! It looks like a great game and I can't wait to try it out.

However I do have a few questions.

I've been reading around about classes and I noticed there is a lot of discussion on them, if I make mine wrong can it more or less make the game impossible?

I've also been reading about an archer class, It sounds interesting but is there anyway to get some sort of animal companion to follow me around everywhere? It seems like it would make the game a lot more enjoyable if I had a pet that would help me out through it.

I've also read about something called fast travel. What is this and should I use it or not? Is there a downside to using it?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Happy gaming! :)

If you don't want to traipse across the world you can use the fast travel system, which automatically brings you to the location. When you begin the game you can only fast travel to the major cities - as you find new locations they're added to your map and you can fast travel to them as well. It's good for areas that you've covered several times or if you have a quick errand you want to do and you'd rather it not take several hours.

If you make a custom class it is possible to set up a broken combination but this will be obvious because the skills won't make sense together so I don't think you need to worry about making a class "wrong."

Ok, Is there anyway to get a companion such as a wolf or another creature? It would be really cool if I could.

Edit: Thanks for replying so fast :)

Fast travel has no downside on game play, but you will most likely miss some beautiful sights.
And don't worry about class and such first play through, if the going gets too tough, adjust the difficulty slider accordingly. Use the first play through to try the game's many aspects out.

Are you on the PC? If so, there are mods, or the command creature spell. But If I were you, I wouldn't go too mod happy until my first playthrough, experience the vanilla game first.

Well, without mods, as far as I know unless you have a really strong command creature spell, there are no animal companions. If your on PC though, you can just get animal mods.
Ninja'd! :toughninja:
D'oh! Just realised you said your on Xbox, so obviously no mods

Not without a really strong Command creature spell, that you'll have to keep re-casting and everthing.
Sometimes, though, Allies are extremely annoying, and often get in the way, so you end up killing them.

Ok, Thanks :)
I guess I'll try some sort of archer character for my first playthrough

Nice idea ^^ easy to play as and can be fun, look at the Wood Elf race, no finer archers in all of Tamriel

The OP should read this carefully, as 'best' is all too relative in O.

Wood Elves *start* with the highest possible archery skill, yet ANY race that ends up with Marksman and Agility at 100 will be as deadly.

Refer to the link in my signature, and it will explain everything you need to know about character creation. The short answer to your question is NO. You cant make a broken character in Oblivion, at worst you will make a counter-intuitive one, meaning you'll make one that winds up using skills that you didn't really want to use.

I
've also been reading about an archer class, It sounds interesting but is there anyway to get some sort of animal companion to follow me around everywhere? It seems like it would make the game a lot more enjoyable if I had a pet that would help me out through it.
No you cant get a pet in vanilla oblivion, you can however cast a spell called "Command Creature" that will make animals fight for you for an amount of time.

Fast travel allows you to quickly move to towns and any pre-discovered locations. The only downside to using it is that you may miss alchemical ingrediants and have a harder time leveling up Athletics and Acrobatics skills.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Happy gaming!

There's not much in the way of pets, but there is one, although maybe not worth it in the long run. You can get a http://images.uesp.net//1/1c/SI-Skinned_Hound.jpg playing the Shivering Isles expansion. You really have to keep track of him though. I found it easy to misplace him (not sure if using fast travel is wise when you finally do get the dog). You'll also have to learn some healing spells to make sure your pet doesn't die too soon. Ones he's misplaced or dead, that's it, you won't get another one.

Well, there are no "pets," but let's not forget that there are horses, including one that is a fairly decent fighting "ally," and there is also a unicorn that can be befriended and ridden.

Like the last two posts said there is a companion who you can get through a side quest in an expansion but don't get excited because he will die really easily and not get replaced. Horses can make decent fighters. In addition there when you beat certain questlines you gain access to human fighting companions. Command Creature I guess is like the official way to get an animal companion but that would be really inefficient and annoying. Your best bet is use the conjuration skill. It lets you summon demon-like creatures for short periods of time (like 15-30 seconds until you are high level) that will fight for you until they disappear. Even though we Xbox-ers can't get mods we still can get a lot of expansions that eventually include companions. One gives you horse armor to make your horses be better in combat, two others just give you access to knights once you reach a certain point in their quests, and one more lets you summon a minion that last until its death. I realize that the last option, the one to give you an untimed minion is your best bet because its pretty strong, a creature, and very permanent. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dunno if this is could be classed as an animal, nor as a helping hand but.. The arena questline..

The wood elf race starts with a command creature power that can be used once every in-game day. It's pretty weak though, you could probably only really use it on deer and the like and they aren't exactly warriors at heart. Besides if your going to be an archer type your true power is going to lie in sneak attacks from a long range. In my experience, companions of any kind aren't very conducive to stealth.

I would suggest using conjuration magic if you want a pet, creatures you summon don't hang around long but can be very useful if you need a distraction while you line up a shot.

If you get the Spell Tomes dlc there is a possibility of getting a summonable black bear pet drop. It's a pretty rare drop though and the pet isn't much use at high levels.

You can get a DLC (Down Loadable Content) addon for your xbox called Wizard's Tower. It gives you a mage tower where you can create a permanent atronach (fire, frost or storm) that will follow you around or wait for you. If it dies, you can make another. That and a horse are about as close as you will get to a useful pet.

I think you will enjoy archery in Oblivion. I think it is well done. It takes kind of a patient and methodical playstyle, and using detect life, sneak and poison helps. Although my archer backs herself up with only magic, I would recommend you learn to use a blade as a back up for your first archer. You can still use magic to help (along with your blade).

Advice?
-Save a lot.
-Embrace the fact that you will probably start your character over many times as you learn; it is a complex game and takes awhile to get the finer points down.
-Spend some time with our Oblivion 'bible': http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion
-Enjoy!

turn down the difficulty since it automatically starts at medium which can be hard for new players, also for harder modes or even medium archers are not the best choice since it takes at least 6+ shots to kill a bandit and by the 2nd there already up close.

Another 3 things to remember when using archery:
Arrows are NOT instant hit. They take time to reach their target.
Allow for range drop. Aim higher at distance to ensure the arrow hits the target.
Lead a moving target. Aim ahead of a moving target to ensure that the arrow will hit the target.
