PC Spec:

CPU - Intel i5 2500k @ 4.2Ghz
RAM - 4GB 1600Mhz
GPU - 2x ATI 5850 1GB Crossfire
OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

Oblivion set to max settings, 4xAA and 16xAF forced in CCC, no graphics mods apart from LOD textures.

Experiencing some weird stuttering when panning the camera, it's only slight but happens continuously and is very noticeable to the point of being unplayable. It's as if a couple of frames are missing for every second I pan, giving a choppy feeling to mouse movements.

The weird part is I only experience the stutter when I disable Crossfire and run off a single GPU, when Crossfire is enabled it's smooth, although I get some strange tearing effects in the upper sections of the screen in certain areas, particularly indoors even with vsync enabled. Also another problem I have with running 2 GPUs is that I get negative crossfire scaling, so worse performance than if I was running a single GPU. I've read scaling in Oblivion is rather hit and miss, some get great scaling, other have really poor scaling or a negative performance impact. I can get a better frame rate by renaming the oblivion.exe to fallout3, going from around 120FPS outside the imperial city with the defualt exe, to 175FPS with it renamed to fallout3, and 125FPS with a single GPU.

I'd be happy if I could get rid of the tearing when using Crossfire as it's a lesser problem, but I'm not sure if it is fixable and if it's just an inherent problem with the current ATI drivers and Crossfire in Oblivion, but if anyone has seen this problem before, any advice is welcome. So unless I can get that fixed I'm focused on resolving my mouse stuttering issues and only using 1 GPU, as one of my 5850's is more than enough to run the game perfectly.

I should mention that I've ran Oblivion before off a single 5850 on my old PC build which consisted of an E8400 and 4GB of RAM, and never had any problems outside of the usual loading stutter that can be rectified with the stutter remover. I've tried numerous fixes which I'll list below, as well as installing Oblivion on a separate XP installation, which used to be my default OS on my old PC and still have the same problems. So things I've tried are:

Complete re-install
Various ini tweaks such as thread and cell buffer tweaks, gained around 10FPS
Oblivion Stutter Remover, which solves all load stuttering
iFPS Clamp = 60
Disabling Audio, along with the Quiet Feet mod
Vanilla Oblivion, so pre-patch and no mods.
Running the Oblivion.exe in admin mode, along with disabling desktop composition and visual themes
Removing 1 GPU entirely
Switching GPU's in PCI-E slots and replacing Crossfire bridge
Drive defrag
Increasing and decreasing page-file size and moving location
Forcing V-sync in CCC with triple buffering, as well as using D3DOverrider
Running without any AA or AF
Disabling Catalyst AI in CCC
Using RadeonPro to use a different Crossfire profile to resolve tearing
Disabling any unnecessary background processes
Setting bUse Joystick=1 to 0
Switching USB mouse ports, as well as using a different mouse
Using Xbox 360 controller to pan camera, which fixed similar problems I had in Fallout 3
Setting Flip Queue Size to 0 or 1
Running game in compatibility mode
Using 10.4 drivers in XP apposed to 11.1 drivers in Win 7

None of those fix the stuttering problem and most don't seem to have any effect on the game at all. I have similar issues with Fallout 3 even in crossfire mode, although I first encountered them on my old PC and Oblivion worked perfectly fine then. Seeing as it's effected by Crossfire and the second GPU I'm inclined to believe this may be a hardware problem, although I have don't have this problem is any other games, and microstutter effects are common when running Crossfire, not without it. Any possible solutions no matter how small is welcome.

Try using Oblivion Stutter Remover, and experiment with various HEAP modes. There is a thread for it in the Mods section.

Already mentioned it in my initial post, been using the mod for a while now so I'm pretty familiar with it, have tried changing various different heap settings as well experimenting with different FPS management settings, none of which have helped. What I have noticed is when the stuttering occurs, you can see fraps rapidly flickering between 59 and 60 FPS, which is a common effect of multi GPU microstutter, although as I mentioned above the problem is resolved when using Crossfire which doesn't make much sense. It's also worth mentioning that it's not the typical microstutter you sometimes see in Oblivion, which is resolved by the FPS clamp trick.

After searching through as many forums threads as possible, it seems like I've pretty much tried everything, but still hoping someone here will have some bizarre fix that no one seems to know about.

Wonder if this is a hardware issue, and not software related at all? If you were feelin' froggy, could try picking up on an SSD drive, installing oblivion to that, (or, at least, some of the resources....) and see if that doesn't improve things at all.

Like I said before, I'm more inclined to believe this is indeed a hardware issue but I'm trying as many tweaks as possible so I can eliminate any chance of it being software related.

I've been meaning to get an SSD but I'm not going out to buy one just to see if it fixes the stuttering, especially considering oblivion has worked fine in the past on my standard HDDs with the stutter remover mod. Pretty sure it's GPU related as enabling Crossfire fixes it for some unknown reason, but even removing one of the GPUs entirely seems to have no effect. I may just resort to re-building my old PC as I have enough parts lying around and see how it goes, but this time only installing 1 GPU from the start in the hope that it will fix any driver compatibility problems. Oblivion isn't exactly known for it's ability to play friendly with different hardware.

Have you tried backdating your drivers??

Not on Win 7, but on XP I'm using the old 10.4 drivers which used to work perfectly with Oblivion. I may try reinstalling the drivers with only 1 GPU installed in the hope that even though only running 1 GPU before didn't help, reinstalling without the 2nd GPU from the start maybe solves a possible driver incompatibility, it's a long shot but it's worth a try.
