ok what you do at the begining of the game go to megaton unlock it but lots of ammo and stimpacks and walk to casys garage cant find it look it up you go inside go down the tunnle and you will find a vault go inside the machien and beat the mission and you will find your dad there and you will go back to rivet city and thats all i know.

Yes, it is possible to skip parts of the main quest and go directly to later parts, if you know where to go. Otherwise you have to stumble on them by accident.

Also, this should probably be in the spoilers section.

Yeah the first time I played I just left Megaton for the first time and decided to walk around and found Smith Casey's garage and pretty much skipped half of the game.

You can go to Vault 87 after you exit Vault 101 and get the last quest very quickly.

you can skip the quest and get on with it, but mind you, you will miss one of the most important thing in your character's basic build, gaining experience that should prep you before going to higher level enemies like the enclave soldiers.

I actually did that on my first game with out thinking about it. And When I realized I missed like 2 Trophies. (that you have to do the missions in a certain line to be able to get them) I had to start over to get them. So some shortcuts might seem good, but with any shortcut you lose out on a lot of valiable information and seeing stuff in the game. So I dont think any shortcut is actually worth it.
