Whats the difference between outcasts and BOS ?

Post » Thu Oct 21, 2010 12:57 am

If i remember right (and i never really do) the outcasts say that BOS is not ''looking at the big picture''
but to me they are, but i may not be right, so i am asking what the difference between them really is?

Outcasts are essentially the same as BoS overall.

Lyons' BoS in the Capitol district have altered their mission to be be primarily about saving the population and suppressing the Super Mutants, rather than collecting technology.

Brotherhood of Steel as we know it, on the East Coast run by Elder Lyons are actually an off-shoot from West Coast BoS and is looking to restore the Capital Wasteland, and their main objective is to wipe out the Super-Mutants there, and make life better for the people in general.

The Brotherhood of Steel Outcasts, actually share the same goal as the original BoS back West, and that is to collect technology, in order to restore the country as a whole. They broke off from a larger band of BoS who were initially sent to do that, but instead decided to save the locals or "go native" as the Outcasts call it.

but then why does it appear as the BOS has more technology?

They seem pretty similar, from my perspective: they both use the same kind of power armor, and rely mostly on laser rifles with the occasional gatling laser or minigun. They're both a little behind the Enclave, which has Tesla armor and plasma rifles as well.

It could be argued that they have the same mission: the protection of humanity. they just go about it differently.

Yeah, their technology is essentially the same. Only advantage the BoS has over the Outcasts is the resources of the Citadel.

And larger numbers.

Their viewpoints differ quite a lot:

Lyon's BoS: Do believe in acquiring old knowledge and technology but use it to help the people of the Wasteland, not just to build themselves up. They believe that protecting the people of the Wasteland is the most important thing they can do. As a result they are more respectful to wastelanders (though still find them an interference at times) and being honourable is being a morally upstanding and courageous individual.

Outcasts: The outcasts don't really care about the wastelanders, while they do that attack or kill them, they find them idiotic and that to help them is a waste of time. Instead they focus on acquiring technology as they believe that will help restore order and power. To them, being honourable means sticking to the original tenets of the East Coast BoS

The difference between the Outcasts and the Brotherhood is the difference between Neutral and Good Karma. Let's examine that, using the case that I feel best illustrates it.

Good karma: You go out of your way to help people, with no thought of a reward.
Example: After eliinating the Grayditch fire ants, you find Bryan Wilks (the child orphaned by the tragedy) a safe new home.

Neutral karma: You respect the moral rights of others, but you don't go out of your way to help them.
Example: You leave Bryan in Grayditch to fend for himself.

Evil karma: You have no regard for others, and are only too willing to profit at their expense.
Example: You sell Bryan to Eulogy Jones. He loses everything, you get money.

Lyons's Brotherhood fights to keep the Super Mutants at bay. They risk their lives helping others. The Outcasts carry out their own assignments, and leave the wastelanders around them to their own devices.

It does wonder how the Brotherhood gets from there to here... we're assuming they don't have vertibirdies like the Enclave. I'd think they'd be FAR more interestied in capturing the things intact than destroying them.

I know that, of course, and don't agree with it. Indeed, I wrote part of the fallout Wiki article on the subject ( http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Those! ). I think that finding Bryan a home in Lamplight should be good karma as well, just maybe half the amount that you get from getting him to Vera. After all, you did find a home for him, even if it wasn't a great home.

I actually think that the Lamplight option was included because it would be a suspension of logic not to have it. Sort of like that in the Vanilla game, where Fawkes, Charon, and RL-3 all refuse to start the purifier, even though none of them would be harmed by the radiation. And even though:
Fawkes is your friend, he admires you and follows you strictly by choice.
Charon is subject to your orders, since you hold his contract. He obeyed Azrukhal without question, even though he wanted him dead.
And RL-3 is a good soldier, and a good soldier follows orders.
