Need help creating a role-playing character!

Post » Tue Oct 26, 2010 2:43 am

Having completed almost every quest in the game with my mage character, I felt slightly unfulfilled, and decided that this was due to my lack of roleplaying, as I had completed the Mages Guild, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood with him. He was also obscenely overpowered with 100% Spell Absorption, and I figured that role-playing would help this cause as well. So, I decided to create a roleplaying character and would like your help creating him. I will, obviously, decide his personality, looks etc. but I would very much appreciate your help in deciding what type of character he should be. I would like a character type that provides at least semi-regular, or at least semi-often, adventure, rather than a, in my opinion, boring one like "Mage Apprentice" or "Steward to the Count(ess)". Examples would include Vampire Hunter, Outcast who lives off the land, or Mercenary. You can use these ideas if you provide a class and race etc. for me. Both genders accepted, as well as all races.

Try a character with some built-in limits. For example, an archer who will not use melee weapons, ever. They live in the woods, either in empty bandits camps, or using a campsite/bedroll mod. They might hunt deer for food. Gathering ingredients and potion-making goes perfect with this. They might never go into town, being entirely self-sufficient, or only do so occasionally to buy and sell things.

Add in a sense of morality/immorality to the character. The above can be an utterly evil person murdering every person they see. Or they might be the opposite, going out of their way to help out the legion patrols and other (rare) travelers. Perhaps they are on a mission to rid the world of bandits (after their spouse/relative was killed by one?). Define something and stick with that for the game.

Perrsonally I like my weird or "developing" type characters; like:

The anarchist who sacrifices all the magic and knowledge stuff she finds to Malacath(The vows and covenants mod helps here), she also enjoys spreading anarchy and manipulating people into killing each other

The typical valiant palidan type that eventually gets corrupted by a pursuit for power (quest mods help here)

Greedy theif who has a constant need to feed some delusion that shes really a "good person"

etc.

An advantage you have is that you have completed most quests in the game. Than means that your next character is free to pick and choose what suits them.

My approach is to travel with my character rather than become my character. Somewhat of a mentor role.

I give the character a basic background, that includes several limitations. Where I differ from some roleplayers however is that I don't define my character by their role or profession. They are simply a person, or elf trying to make their way in Cyrodiil. It is up to them to find their own role or path. Once I meet them in the Imperial Prison, they call the shots from there on. They don't march at all to any sort of script that I provide; rather, they forge their own path. Over a period of time, we grow to know each other and work out understandings that allow us to get along and travel together.

My current character was a Bosmeri orphan from Bravil that had some skill with a bow and was 17 years old. By that stage in her life, she knew that she was physically weak and would never be able to improve (stuck forever at 30 strength). Similarly, she was pretty quick, but had terrible endurance and realiized that would never change either (stuck forever at 30 endurance). Boom. Then I met her in the Imperial Prison.

Over time, she figured out that with her skills and limitations, she would never be able to wield melee weapons, wear much armor, or take the damage of toe-to-toe confrontations. She also realized that she loved the bow. The path she set for herself was to learn magic to help her survive as an archer. She worked her way into the Arcane University and learned how to use magic to help support her love for the bow. The Mages Guild was very good to her, and she has repayed that loyalty. Just like life, things happen that spur her to action or to set goals for herself. Those goals or tasks often lead to adventure, danger and more goals/tasks that she sets for herself. There is so very much she wants to do that she is never bored. She has developed a very full and complex personality, and I have never told her what to do - I just listen carefully to her and help with a few controls and logistical details.

One thing that helped my roleplaying was taking a dead-is-dead approach to my character. Their mortality is the ultimate vulnerability regardless of class, style, or activity. In truth, it's more of a no-reloading-to fix-a-mistake sort policy and all my characters have had to sweat out some awkward moments.

Instead of imposing real world restrictions, I accept the game world as valid and my characters are free to fast travel, run for hours, stay up for days and not eat for weeks if they chose to. That said, they all have eaten and slept regularly, and loved traveling by horseback.

My only suggestion for class and birthsign would be to play what suites you. I started Oblivion playing warrior types but my last three were Mages although each had markedly different personalities and styles. If I start a new one he/she will almost certainly be a Mage. The ability to throw a fireball from your hand is not something you get to do IRL.

All right, based on what you guys have said I think I've come up with a perfect role-playing character for me: Nillyadon the Male Altmer Pyromancer, a Battlemage of the Imperial Legion who will not use Illusion magic, and will only use selected spells from the other schools. Unfortunately, the only direct damaging effect he can use will be Fire Damage.

He was placed in the Legion as a test to see if other races had what it takes to be an honourable and worthy upholder of the law, as well as one of each of the other races. He was the first one to be discharged after drunkenly using a 'Damage Speed' spell on a rude stranger in a bar, Alval Uvani. Despite Uvani now being fully cured, a strange effect takes place if he ever drinks mead, because he was drinking mead at the time of him being immobilised, and now his body associates it with paralysis and paralyses himself.

He was placed in the Dungeon of the Imperial City, and he now is looking to redeem himself. Because Uvani provoked him, he is allowed to keep, and still uses, his Imperial Legion armour, although his hood has been taken, and he has replaced it with a Red Silk Hood, to reflect his affinity with Fire.

He generally has a violent temperament, and will never leave a Necromancer or Conjurer alive. However, he is slightly more lenient towards Bandits and Marauders, as they are just petty criminals. Sure he'll still kill them, but he won't give chase if they run out of the dungeon. He hopes one day to be reinstated to the Legion, or at least some other important duty within the government.

If anyone wants to ask him questions, he'd be happy to answer! After all, he got trained how to resist torture and interrogation...
