Can't type quotation marks in the console.

Post » Tue Oct 26, 2010 12:11 pm

Hi,

The topic is pretty self explanatory really. When I try to type " in the console it produces @ instead.

When I type @ in the console it produces ; instead.

I have tried every key with and without holding shift and I can't type a quotation mark.

I also had the tilde key problem which wouldn't produce any letter or symbol at all but I managed to fix that with MGE.

I am using windows 7 and have an English ( United Kingdom ) keyboard.

I have tried searching for the problem on google etc and have found the problem on two other forums but the solutions didn't work for me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thabks in advance.

Morrowind is built for the American QWERTY keybored. In England the standard keyboard is BS 4822:1994 qwerty. While most letters are located in the same place they added a few more symbols like the £ and € signs and some EBCDIC symbols (?, |). Thus all the "symbol" locations changed.

because I never used the British keyboard I couldn't tell you were it is, but if its anything like the french keyboard try using the alt key as opposed to shift.

So are you saying that perhaps I should try changing my keyboard to an English American version?

I changed my keyboard to "English - US"

Now when I'm not in MW " button types @ and @ button types " but nothing has changed within the game. I still have the same problem. :(

further testing shows that whatever I change my keyboard to... it doesn't affect MW in game... I even brought up the language bar and played MW in window mode.. and it still would change back to English, even if I set the default language to any other language... :(

This has been requested to be moved to the mods section as the OP is not having a lot of success with this and it is messing with his ability to test mods.

I use a UK keyboard and I found the quotation mark was shift+@. If that fails, hit random buttons until one appears. It's there somewhere.

I just had a thought, doesn't MGE have a keyboard mapper? Might it be possible to use that to remap the quotation marks back to their proper keys?

Whenever I click on a key in the remapper, I receive an error "Error creating direct input device".

Dumb thought, but you wouldn't be using Morrowind Code Patch and have Polish Keyboard Support checked or something?

No, I'm not... but that gives me one more idea that I haven't tried yet... what if I do tick polish keyboard support and switch to a polish keyboard? I'm willing to try anything at this point...

Hmm - the key remapper in MGE gives you an "Error creating direct input device" ?!
Whatever you try, there's no quotation mark ?

What kind of keyboard are you using ?
There must be something unusual about it, as I have never heard of such issues. Now the Error in MGE hints at that, too. If it is a special keyboard, you might have to install drivers for it. While any keyboard will let you type almost anything in windows, there are some that require drivers to make use of special functionality. Can it be something like that?

It's possible to edit the internal keymap in Morrowind.exe with a hex editor. The (English language) character for shift-2 is at file offset 0x37524b, if you replace the @ (hex 40) with a " (hex 22) it should work in-game.

I have encountered similar problems with my new computer with Windows7, where the tilde-key was not functioning. I fixed this with the MGE-mapper (in a rather clumsy way). I have also the quotation-problem and the quotes are not available on my keyboard. I have a danish keyboard, so I was used to search for the keys on my old machine, but now " is not on any key.
I posted in the technical issue forum, but no one had a working solution to it, so I'm left to coc to one-word locations when mod-testing. So if anyone has found a solution for this, my life would also be easier.
