Explosions and Base Models

This is a horribly mundane thing to make a topic for, I know, but is it possible to attach an explosion to an object that wouldn't usually have one? To use an exaggerated example, something like an exploding throwing knife?

Also, is it possible to change only the base model of an object so that it keeps it's original properties but simply takes a different appearance? I.E. Replacing the base model for the thermic lance with the base model for the spear?

The general idea for that is that I want to make a spear for melee rather than throwing and I don't recall any way to change the type from thrown to two hand melee. If there is a way that will work as well.

Any help is appreciated.
