Some Melee/Unarmed weapon ain't Silenced?

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 5:00 am

So as I open up GECK for information for the latest flame war about melee/unarmed, I have discovered that the high tier melee/unarmed weapon have a detection sound level of "Normal"

Initially I though that's why I can't use the Paladin Toaster to silently execute all the BOS in Hidden Valley. But as it turns out the BoS just have telepathic ability which instantly become hostile.

Anyways, than I venture to Camp Forlorn Hope and West Side, using ballistic fist (which certainly would make some sound) to mug unfortunate test subjects; but as it turns out the NPC is unaware the explosion right next to him which send his dog flying 10 meters away.

So, are high tier melee/unarmed silenced weapon or not?

Some things are hard-coded by weapon type, like Grenades and Mines removing a copy of the Weapon form from inventory when fired. This must just be one of those things. You could fix it by adding a script on the weapons with OnFire and http://geck.gamesas.com/index.php/CreateDetectionEvent.

It's not hard coded, you can open up "WeapNVBallisticFist" in the GECK and un-tick 'silent' from the 'Game Data' tab. There is also a 'Sound Detection Level' list in the 'Art and Sound' tab- I set the ballistic fist to 'Loud' for person preference.

All melee weapons act as silenced no matter their detection level. That's the part that's hardcoded.

Oh, so changing all those settings has no effect? That's pretty lame. The 'silent' box should be force-checked and grayed out then.

Why? If the devs all knew that, there's no point coding more stuff into the GECK.

If merely knowing something keeps you from adding a way to visualize it in the GECK, well.. heh, why do we have categories of items? different lists? that's pretty poor logic.

If you can't see the difference between sorting content so it's easier to find things and disabling fields everyone* already knows do nothing, then I don't think you're in any position to criticise other people's logic.
*everyone the GECK was designed for, i.e. the devs.

The first will have a measurable gain in terms of time taken to perform tasks, the latter will simply waste time coding stuff into the GECK that could've been spent on productive work.

Aside from the fact that the GECK was released as a player tool, your argument still doesn't work. That "waste of development time" that "everyone knows about" would remove a meaningless option (i.e. the 'silent' check box) and reduce end user confusion, which by the way, the GECK is released for. End users, remember those? Of course you don't!

But by all means, please keep insisting that options that display incorrect information and provide choices that do nothing should remain there! Or perhaps you just like knowing that everyone who isn't well-versed in the GECK will take displayed data at face value so that they can be corrected by you, in a rather snide manner, on this forum.

It shouldn't give us the option if we can't change it. Period.

The GECK is an internal tool, made for the devs and released to us because 'why not'. If you want them to polish and buff it into an idiot-proof end user product before releasing, well, we won't be getting it in future.
Alternatively you could just accept it's a rough-around-the-edges dev tool, keep that in mind, and get on with using it rather than complaining.
