Utility Programs

Hi, not trying to start any flame wars here, just curious as to what utility programs folks use. There seems to be a fairly large selection. Last I checked, 2 different Achieve invalidation invalidated, 3 (maby more?) mod managers, one of which seems have been taken down.

What kind of spurred this post, is I used to use New vegas mod manager, which has since been taken down. It was a nice program, that worked with no issues, just install and play. Tried switching over to the latest fomm, and was getting read only errors. And there is absolution no chance of me turning off UAC. So now I am debating on the merits of doing the work around to use fomm, or switch to something like Butchers Pete which also sounds neat.

As for archive invalidation invalidated, honestly, not sure which one to pick. I am used to fallout 3, and depending on fomm's built in AII. Which is one of the reasons I love fomm that and its package manager..

Finally, is it actually possible to pick where new vegas installs? Or at least move it out of a UAC locked area? Steam at times really annoys the hell out of me.

edit: Getting fomm to work was surprisingly easy because of the readme. Create shortcut and run it as admin. I am curious to know however, if there will be other issues because of UAC.

You can install steam itself in a UAC-friendly area. I have a separate drive for my games, so steam is located there. I am not sure whether or not you can individually specify a location for a specific game. I have had luck in the past moving the steam directory - or at least the game information inside it to a new location. I've used this to help get machines up and running faster so I don't have to re-download everything.

Yep. This. I dont think you can specify where steam installs the games, but like you said, you can relocate the Steam directory. I run mine (Win 7, 64-bit) as a directory right off the root (C:\ drive). Works fine. No problems, and I don't have to mess with UAC (even though I turned it off)
